I recently bought a 07 Toyota Yaris Automatic (Jap Import) I have noticed that there is a lot of engine noise while driving especially when pressing against the accelerater - Any idea's what this could be?

Also when looking under the bonnet i could not find the transmission fluid, do you know where i can find the trans fluid?

confused!

Please help!

That little 1.5 is working. We have a Scion Xa with the same driveline. It gets kinda raspy when you step on it.

The transmission has WS (World Standard) fluid and is not due a check or service for 100,000 miles. Yes, that is one hundred thousand miles. All new Toyota vehicles, with automatic transmissions, are being built this way.

mine yar ist very quiet and powerful. Quiet at over 110KPH. Possibly substandard oil in there. In the States I would use no lighter than a 5W-30 - some folks promote the 5W-20 which will cause noise and engine death.
A nice Elf excellium 5W-30 should do the trick. 3.5L to fill

Grumpy, running 0W-20 in the Yaris will not cause engine death. Why do you write such lies? There are millions of cars that have used 0W-20 for trillions of miles with no issues, none. In fact, Toyota back-spec'd the 2007 Yaris to use 0W-20 oil, and I have never read of an engine failure from this. Ever. And why would Toyota do this for millions of in-warranty cars? If using 0W-20 caused engine death, then Toyota stands to lose millions of dollars on in-warranty repairs.

Also, using 0W-20 will not cause more engine noise over using a heavier grade of oil. Thinner oil means it flows faster, cooler and gets to all the parts faster upon first start up of the day.

I am a degreed retired, Bell Laboratories Mechanical Designer/ engineer, experienced race engine builder and high-end automotive electronics package designer with a blooming interest in tribology. In my experience You CANNOT design an engine to specify 5W-20 and 5W-30 given the LARGE difference in operating viscosity at 100C. I Do NOT have issue with engines designed exclusively for 20 weight and agree to the successful application. But Toyota continues to specify a broad spectrum of oil weights and this is a recipe for disaster. You have no data as neither do I have (at hand) statistically relevant data on engine failure frequency; so you have not countered my arguement in any meaningful fashion. I have had three engine failures, running cross specified 5W20 oil, in various engines - so I surely do have a very PERSONAL though anecdotal sample. I DO hear the engine noise and engine noise means boundary lubrication and boundary lubrication means engine wear over useful life - especially given current poor API standards for EP add packs. I stick to my guns and you have presented me with no data. Quote US (with footnote) some meaningful data.

First you make affirmative (not passive) claims that are ouright lies, then you follow up with admitting that your affirmative claims have no data to back them up. What kind of engineer are you? It seems evident by your many claims and unfounded affirmations that you are ignorant.

You can try to impress with a long list of so called titles and degrees, but the bottom line is that your many posts here, and at YarisWorld.com belie your so called titles, and run contra to the thinking of the tribologists at BobIsTheOilGuy.com.

I would rather trust the engineers at Toyota, then you, an internet personality showing no proof, no cites, nothing to back up your most peculiar and unfounded claims.

Go sell your bool sheet someplace else old timer.

Hummmmmmmm...........Name calling?.......now that is soooooo mature.
I don't have ANY degrees at all , but if any engine I have has to operate in any condition that I feel is stressful as in heat/rpm/towing/working..........I put in a slightly heavier blend........but it is hot down here. I have had no engine at all seize/throw a rod/burn a bearing............and I ran the sh-t out of a 20r on 20-50 castrol for 350,000 miles.............valve seals would smoke alittle after an idle.......and I drove it with the pedal on the floor. After 3500 miles I was a 1/2 qt low............

It would be "immature" to allow bogus lies to propagate in this thread. Sorry you're okay with BS posts
