YarisGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Yaris.
This is a discussion thread titled "MP3 Player help please", within the Yaris forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
I just purchased a 2007 Yaris Sedan last Friday. I bought an adaptor cord at Radio Shack to plug in my ipod and the stereo display changes to AUX and the music plays through the stereo but I can't control the ipod through the stereo. I can only change songs, playlists etc. through the ipod. The cord is only 12" long so I have to reach down to find the ipod in the cubbyhole that it sits in (not something I want to do on Southern California freeways during rush hour). In the owner's manual it looks like you can control the MP3 player through the stereo, am I missing something here?
frametek, the way I understand it, and the way it works on my new Yaris S, you can not control an external unit through the factory unit. You can just play it through the aux input. You can control tracks, folders etc on a cd with MP3 or WMA files on it through the factory unit. I really like my new "S" sedan. I managed to get one with the power package. I really wanted the side air bags but didn't want to wait 4 to 5 months to order that option.

Well, that is interesting. My dealer said that he could get a car with anything I wanted in 6 to 8 weeks, but said that the Distributor (Gulf States) said the air bag option could take 4 or 5 months. He did say it could "possibly" be a little sooner but probably not. Thanks for the info.

I'm in the Denver Region, I double checked and side airbags are not an issue on a Yaris, Gulf States have a different build agreement with Toyota, all I know is that I have no Yaris's on the ground and getting them is taking 6-7 weeks.
Regards

Hi, this subject prompted me to create an account. I don't own a Toyota Yaris, but a good friend of mine just bought one. I can break down the audio capabilities for the stereo in the car. Because the setup baffled me at first, I stewed about the capabilities of the audio system. Basically, there is an external 1/8 inch input jack which can be used for mp3 players, walkmans (if anyone still listens to cassette tapes) a voice recorder (like in the movies, usually involving shrinks) and whatever else you wish to hear through your stereo (drum machines, video games such as PSP's, gameboys, ect.) Once plugged in, the stereo automatically switches to the "AUX", or auxiliary function. There is no function on the radio to control your MP3 player! Selecting you songs has to be done manually through your MP3 player, which was mentioned in the previous post. However, the single disk CD player can play MP3 and WAV files. Listen up, this is where it gets good. If you have 150 songs on your computer, and want to burn them onto a a CD, the Yaris will be able to play all those songs on one CD, as long as you burn them in data format. So that means: instead of burning an "audio CD" that may play up to 20 songs at best, select "DATA CD" once you open your CD burning program, and start adding songs to the list to burn. You can even get more elaborate by putting the bands/groups into individual folders based on each artist. The stereo has a "Folder" button, which allows you to scroll through different artists on your CD, as long as you're burning the folder with the songs in it, and not the individual songs. If you have 10 songs per folder, usually you can fit about 15 different artists on your data CD, give or take the length of your songs (MP3's take up less space than WAVs.) The folder option allows you to scroll through different artists, while displaying text across your stereo, which enables you to identify the artist, and the song which is currently being played. Hope this helps. As far as airbags go, this post wasn't about airbags, plus I don't own a Yaris, so you're out of luck there. Only the important issues, haha. Take care.
Good post, Midimykeys, you hit it right on the head.
As for the Yaris' stereo head displaying song information from and controlling an ipod, the AUX jack won't let you do it. Mini-stereo jacks like that are really just for passing audio signal straight through to the stareo, kinda like playing your ipod using an old cassette tape adapter.
If you want to be able to control the ipod with the stereo, you would need to get an ipod interface kit from Toyota. Instead of using the mini-stereo cable through the headphone jack, it uses the weird ipod interface jack at the bottom of your ipod. Here in Canada, they're about $300 from the dealer. If you're more of a do-it-yourself-er, you can get a pretty decent stereo from Alpine or Pioneer, plus a dash kit and an ipod adapter from ebay for about $200.
Help please. I've tried burning these .wma files to a data CD and it still won't work in 2007 Camry. Plays music on computer, but not in car. I've tried Windows Media Player and Nero Burning ROM 7 both. Yeah, I know I can just plug the MP3 in the AUX, but doggoned if the player is supposed to display title artist, etc, I WANT IT TO. Matter of principle here.
so40. I'm also interested in the Sedan with power package... from what i know.. if you choose power package, it will come with an integrated stereo head unit.... could you tell me what you see in the integrated HU? is it any good? i heard from another thread that it is a fujitsu HU. I don't like fujitsu cause it doesn't give quality sounds like a pioneer. and is the power rating written there? like 50w x 4 or something?
robert, i think you have to convert and burn it into .mp3 format and not .wma. give it a try.
