Question 07 Yaris Cabin Air Filter

I bought a new 07 Yaris "S" sedan with the power package this week. I really like this little car so far. In the owners manual it states that some of the Yaris models have a cabin air filter. I took the glove box off and looked at mine. It appears that it does not have a filter. There is a "door" that comes off and you can see the area above the fan and you can tell it is made for a filter to fit in there. However, there is no filter installed and I can't tell if it needs a "frame" for the filter or if it just sits on the plastic above the fan. Does anybody have any info on this?

A Part Number for the filter would be nice, then I can buy one and see if it will fit without the need of an extra "mount" of some type.

I have a Canadian 05 Yaris (European version) and faced the same issue. The removable drawer is in fact for the Cabin Air Filter. It does NOT come with most models, nor does the dealer readily know if the car should/should not have the filter. The Cdn part number for the filter in my car is 88568-52010-83. I'm sure that will get your dealer onto the right USA part #.

I strongly suggest you install the filter - mine is BLACK already from all of the @#@$ in the air! Saves time/effort scraping all of that off of the inside of the windshield.

That part number should work in the US as well. An easy way to check (since I'm not at work now), is just call your local Toyota parts dept and ask them to "check a number". Read them that part number and ask the price.

I intended to post this a couple of weeks ago. The Toyota PN for this cabin air filter is 87139-52020. It took my dealer several weeks to get one. I can not find any after market company selling one at this time. It does fit and all I had to do was pull the glove box out, open the front cover and put the filter in. This is a flexible filter, that is, it doesn't have a rigid frame around it. You have to bend it in a little while you are putting it in the housing. It is simple and you will see what I mean when you install it.

The retail at Toyota is $32.00. I managed to get 10% off, but it is a very flimsy filter. I hope Micron Air or Purolator or some other company starts making them. I am told this filter fits some Rav4's, but the part numbers are not the same. I would like to compare it to a Rav4 filter and see. Micron Air has a filter for the rav4, but does not show one for this Toyota part number.

Technically, the US version Yaris has an A/C system different than the CAF-equipped (EU model) version, which is why you won't find one on your vehicle. The different A/C systems have different air flow restriction capabilities, and Toyota engineers determine whether or not it's 100% safe to install from a reliability standpoint. Chances are, you won't have any problems...but this is why you won't see the Yaris on a Cabin Air Filter application chart in a US dealer, although it can be retrofitted.

I wouldn't recommend making your own, because CAF's are specifically designed to allow a certain amount of air flow. A filter not designed for your vehicle, can cause too much restriction...and create potential problems for your A/C motor.

The 87139-52020 is the OE part number for the CAF-equipped Yaris, but there is a service part available. This would be the 87139-YZZ08, which is also an electrostatic (same material) CAF at an MSRP of $25.00.

The Engineers have found that some vehicles experience negative reactions with some systems in the car when the Cabin Filter is added needlessly. It is recommended that if your car did not come with one, don't add it. I can't tell you why, but one vehicle experiences cooling system problems when the filter is added. Just a thought, but these guys have a ton of education and experience and most of us don't know enough to override their designs. Hope that helps a bit.

*** Old thread resurrected ***

I found out today while browsing through the owners manual (2008 pg's 252-254) that I have an A/C filter! I did a search here first before posting this wonderful piece of information and found this thread.

On page 254 it says and I quote "When using the air conditioning system make sure that a filter is always installed. Using the air conditioning system without a filter may cause damage to the system".

Well I trotted out to the garage and removed the glove box and open the little hatch and lo' and behold! No filter! I called my Toyota mechanic buddy at the end of his shift today and said "guess what I found out about the A/C filter!" and he said "you don't have a filter". RIGHT! I said. He said he would bring one home for me tonight. Excellent! He said that when they do a 15,000 mile service they always check for one and typically they are not installed (on the low end models). When they are there he said they are always "disgusting!". I can only imagine the crud they are filtering that would otherwise get into the car.

I will install it as soon as I have it and report back with any issues. We're in the mid 90's to low 100's this time of year so I'm using the A/C on a daily basis in some stop-and-go traffic.

Picked up the cabin air filter from my buddy last night and installed it. We'll see how it goes regarding air flow and filtration. I'll try to remember to check it in about a month. IF I'm really on top of it, I'll take a before (as it is brand new - tonight) and after picture to see what it's trapping and post the results.

Nice! I totally forgot to check the filter now that it's been a...errr...few months, 7 to be exact. I'll make a note to pull it out tonight and see what's what.

Here's a close up pic of how it looks after 7 months of use. This used to be nice and white. I'm glad this crud didn't make it any further into my car.
