I have just bought a Yaris 2 Diesel model. I,m also interested in info about the electric engine heater. My model is not equipped with this heater and to protect the engine in the winter (short trips) I would like to install a heater.

The 1NZFE gas engine in the Cdn/US 2nd Generation Yaris, the Cdn Echo Hatchback (1st gen Yaris) as well as the Scion Xa and Xb uses a proprietary Toyota block heater that slips into a machined hole on the firewall side of the engine block (in the water jacket). Knowing Toyota they will have leveraged this same technology for the Diesel engine as well. Go to your Toyota dealer for their input.

Hope this helps you out . . .

By the way the block heater is extremely effective, makes a huge difference in the cold (05 Echo HB, gas, cold Canadian winters).

The block heater is used to keep engine coolant warm in cold climates, so the coolant will not freeze and crack the engine block. It also aids the heater in warming you inside the vehicle when first started.

This heater usually takes the place of anengine block freeze plug. It has a cord on it.
You have to plug this cord into an electrical outlet, usually with an extension cord.
During warms months, you just dont plug it in and it does nothing but sit there waiting for winter to arrive.
It can be usually be added if not equipped.

The only stupid question, is one you DON'T ask.
Ask anything you wish, there are alot of smart and well informed people here at TS.

The block heaters are for gas or diesel engines. There are companies that make them for many models. It keeps the coolant warm.
I had a 1987 FORD 4x4 ,6 clyinder (gasoline). I added a block heater to it, many years ago, so when I started it in the morning for work, the heater was already blowing warm.
I have seen many toyota gasoline engines with an engine block heater as well as a few diesel. Not to many diesel Toyotas here in the states.
