Re: Solara Questions - ASK ME!

We have a 2002 Solara, 4 cyl with 87k that has started to idle low and somewhat roughly and occasionally stalls. My initial reaction (shows you how old I am) was that the idle simply needs adjustment but that is probably unrealistic, eh? What could be causing it? I'd like to be ahead of the curve somewhat before I take it to a mechanic. Thank you for any reply!

Re: Solara Questions - ASK ME!

I would probably clean the throttlebody first. Then I would see if there have been any codes stored. You didnt mention the engine light so I presume (i dont like to presume) that there should not be any major malfunction, just a good cleaning is needed.

Re: Solara Questions - ASK ME!

Thank you for your response. It led me in the correct (I hope) direction and with some research I have a pretty good idea of what to do...lots of tutorials out there. I'll report back on the results.

IAC (idle air control) valve may be sticking and result in your idle problem. Inexpensive part that you can replace yourself.

Re: Solara Questions - ASK ME!

Well, bought the Sea Foam and managed to get the procedure done despite the appalling lack of space and my big hands. Started fine and ran a bit high on the idle for the first few days with the starts going to about 2500rpm. That's all settled down now and the thing runs like a charm.

Thanks for the help!!!

Cool, glad it was a relatively easy fix.

Re: Solara Questions - ASK ME!

I'm loving my Toyota Solara. Had it for 4 years now. It was my first car, and my first Toyota. I've been driving used vehicles for my first years of driving. I've never been particularly interested in working on used cards, but now that I've got a NEW one, I'm getting a bit of a bug to customize it to make it uniquely mine. I got a lot to learn, so be gentle with me, but I'm good about doing my homework before asking questions.

Re: Solara Questions - ASK ME!

I'm getting a little wind noise from the driver's door at the top where the window meets the weatherstripping and when I look out the rear view mirror it appears that the top of the door is not perfectly flush with the body, as the passenger door is. 2006 Solara coupe. How do I adjust the door? Can I adjust the latch, or do I have to adjust the hinges too?
