05 Tundra - can it handle a 24 ft enclosed car hauler?

Hey Guys,

I have an 05 4.7 4x4 double cab truck. I pull an open car trailer with it all the time and it seems to be fine but I'm looking at getting an enclosed car trailer. Probably a 24 ft.

What specs or info do I need to be aware of when looking into this? I know there's more than just what the trailer weighs, tung weight? what else? I'll be driving this across country (race car stuff) so I need to make sure it's safe and within reason.

Thanks for any info or tips. Truck has an electric trailer brake controller already that I use on the open trailer.

Malcolm

As far as I know, trailer weight and tongue weight are all to worry about to stay legal and safe. Obviously the farther away you are from maxing out these 2 numbers, the safer it is.

Yeah it's not looking good. My buddy recently got a 24 ft enclosed and it's 5500 lbs empty. With his Mustang and some tires, gas etc. he's around 9250 ~ 9500 lbs. The Tundra is rated a measly 7100 lbs at best. I'm going to have to get an F150 or something.

If your buddy's numbers are correct and they sound like they're in the ballpark an F150 is not your solution either.
You need to look at 3/4 ton trucks. Focus on payload capabilities of your tow vehicle before anything else.

I'm no expert in the matter but just looking online at newer F150s they seem to be rated for 10,000 to 12,000+ lbs depending on options and configuration, engine type etc. More than covers the 9250 lbs and a bit of headroom. Unless you really load up the trailer and throw things in the bed of the truck. I suppose that could be an issue.

Have 2002 Sequoia with TRD supercharger. Does fine with flat trailer loaded to 6000# but found towing a V-front enclosed 7' tall trailer for race Karts weighing perhaps 4000# loaded challenging on Interstate above 60 mph. Does fine at speeds below that so appears to be strictly a wind resistance issue and as above, had pulled open car trailer with 3850# antique (1972 Mercedes SEL) on it from Louisiana to Pennsylvania and back with no effort on interstates. (supercharger does help though) Finally bought F250 diesel to haul the tall trailer. Your enclosed race trailer will likely have similar issues. Still use the Sequoia as long as not going on interstate with trailer and does fine.

Thanks for the feedback. What you're saying is very much inline with everyone I talk to. I hear a lot it doesn't matter if the enclosed trailer is empty or full it feels like you're towing it almost full all the time due to wind resistance.
You noticed a challenge over 60 mph with 4000 lbs or so. I can only imagine how bad 9000+ in a larger trailer is going to be.
I'm definitely going to need another truck.

Re: 05 Tundra - can it handle a 24 ft enclosed car hauler?

Sequoia with internal load only on Interstate/75mph highways in Texas and rolling hills - 15-16 mpg. Lightly loaded Race trailer at 75 mph - 6.6 mpg. Same trailer, same load, same highway in opposite direction at 65 mph- 8.8 mpg. under normal conditions can only hear supercharger when going uphill or accelerating. with tall trailer, hear it all the time above 55 mph. Above 65 mph, feel like truck is working much harder- just is not "happy" sounding or feeling. Have owned vehicle since new and had TRD supercharger installed at dealership with approx. 8000 mile on odometer. Now with 205,000 so very used to it over the years.
