Hello everyone. I've recently purchased an '02 Sequoia and am learning the ins and outs of the machine. The center diff lock has been a confusing issue, but I believe from reading through the forums I have come to the understanding that the '01 and '02 models will only lock the center differential in 4 low and 1st gear whereas the '03 and up have a button to lock it on demand.

My question is this. Since the lockup probably occurs through activation of some sort of switch related to the position of the shifters, is there a way to bypass that function and create a manual switch similar to the newer models? I assume it is simply applying power to a solenoid which engages the diff lock. Am I wrong? Does anyone have experience doing this? Thanks very much.

I have a 2001 Sequoia Limited 4wd that I have modified to be able to lock the center diff anytime in low range (toggle switch). I did the mod before the '03 came out with the "button" so I made mine only work in low range... when I need it most. If I were to do it again, knowing that the '03 and later was set-up to have it lock in 4H as well as 4L, I would remove the 4L restriction making it available for both 4H and 4L. But realistically, in the past 8 years I have not needed or wished I had the diff locked in 4H.

Recently a Total Chaos customer was referred to me by Total Chaos for this mod on a 2002 Sequoia. I sent all the info to him and understand he is making the mod this weekend. The same mod should work on the 2002... I believe he is doing the exact same mod so it will only work in low range. Awaiting his results...

Welcome aboard! Guess you thought you may as well join since you're going to get credit for a great mod soon anyway.

- Ya that's me working on it now. I hope to do it so it is locked in 4hi and 4lo still figuring that out. I'll be taking a bunch of pictures and posting it up here as soon as it is done, probably in about a week. My truck is on jackstands in the garage getting lots of work done as I have time, I have the dash apart and wiring out, I need to find a pretty switch for the dash and I'll probably make it into the right place tomorrow to pick one up.

I did it and it works!..... Except for one small problem. I have wired it so it will lock in lo range in all gears and this part works flawlessly (at least everyone can have 4lo!), the dash even indicates correctly if the center diff is locked. When in high range when you throw the switch, the truck shifts into 4wd and the center diff locks, all indicators are correct as in 4lo, the truck's speedo are correct and the transmission shifts correctly except the engine computer throws on the cel with code P1782 "trensfer L4 SW Circuit Malfunction" is the description on my scan tool. I have tested it at speeds up to about 50 kmph and it seems to work great. I have set off and reset the code several times during testing and don't have any concerns about dammage at this point. I also found when the switch is on the "vsc off" button can be activated at any speed now.

I plan to have a separate thread up tonight with a full mod description with lots of pictures. I am super excited to share this mod with everyone and will give a big thanks to new member motileracing :first: for his support. The mod will describe how to wire it so you can lock it in 4lo only which will should not ever throw a code or how to wire it so it can be done in hi or lo for those that don't mind resetting the cel every once in a while or that would like to help troubleshoot a resolution to this issue as I will continue to do.
