'01 SR5 with tranny issues - need advice

My beloved '01 SR5 4.7 Auto transmission 4x2 needs a new tranny. Strong rumbling and vibration when going over 35 with overdrive, similar to prior post on the '00 with 450K+ miles. Transmission shop took the pan off and it is full of metal shavings. We need a new planetary gear I'm told. Estimate of $2500, half of which is just the cost of the gear. I am trying to find a way to reduce that cost.
I have found some transmissions on ebay that are close to my locale and from what is stated to be the same engine size, automatic tranny, 4x2, etc. in the $750 range. The only difference is these trannys are from an '03 and '04. Both sellers are dealers of salvaged parts and have lots of positve feedback.
My question is; Are these compatible with my '01 and is there anything else I need to be aware of?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Others on this board have put 03/04 2WD trannmissions in their 00 - 02 2WD Tundras. On the 2WD Tundra transmissions, the tailshaft needs to be swapped from your current transmission so that all the sensors will plug in. Other than that, it should bolt up and plug in. I have personally put an 04 4WD transmission into my 00 4WD Tundra without any modifications required. It is my understanding from reading this discussion board that swapping the tailshaft on the 2WD transmissions is very simple.

Many on this board prefer the 03/04 transmissions over the older ones and claim that the planetary gear set has been improved. I have seen 03/04 transmissions in the $500 - $800 range. Good Luck.
