Last week I changed the front brake pads on the wifes 06 Avalon. I was going to change the rear pads also but was not quite sure if there was anything different with the rear replacement due to the emergency brake or is it pretty much the same as the front?

Should be the same. Chock the opposite wheel you're owrking on & don't set the
e-brake when swapping pads. ;)

You may also want to make sure there's enough room in the master cylinder reservoir for the fluid when you spread the calipers for the new pads. A brake fluid flush is also needed...right rear, left rear, right front, left front.
