The paint on the metal, horizontal rear window trim is hurting. This is the rear hatch/door trim just above the rear window wiper.

How do I remove that piece for painting without destroying it. On line searches have been fruitless. Any insights appreciated.

I have seen some friends use plastic dip and if you coat it right it will last year's. I coated my friends tc emblems, they didn't trust themselves to do it right. If you do it proper 8 plus layers or coats it will only come off when you want it to. Make sure you prep the area to ensure proper bonding. My friend has a jeep wj he did his stock rims in two coats which isn't right but he went lazy. Anyway lasted 2 years of mudding crawling and is just now showing the chrome on the wheels again.

(this is not a pro fix by any means) It actually comes off pretty easily without damage. I've done this years ago so I can't remember the exact processes but it was fairly simple using a trim tool and pushing it upwards. I'm not a painting pro by any means but I just chipped away the flaky plastic and painted it with a few coats of cheap auto enamel. I also did plastic trim pieces that ran along the side of the window on the lift gate. It still looks pretty good. I figured that the parts were easy to remove to if it looked bad after a few years I could just take them back off and follow the process again.
