Just picked up our 2006 Avalon from the dealer , was there for yearly state inspection.

To our surprise it didn't pass inspection due to a bad steering rack!

I have a couple of questions if someone could help.

Is it common for a steering rack to go bad on an Avalon with just over 50k?

There is no visable leak on the floor of our garage and no signs of any problem, dealer said leak was in the boot, should there be any signs of fluid in that area?

I know times are tough ... but are we being had?

It is gonna cost $1200 including wheel alignment... does replacing this require any specialize tools?

I've seen a pic of the rack and it appears to be 1 unit and a bolt on item... I usually repair my own equipment.

thanks

If your power steering fluid hasn't been dropping then you are being had. When the seals leak they do fill up the boots but you would notice loss of fluid in the reservoir.
