The next-generation Toyota Tundra will receive a version of the same Cummins diesel powerplant as the next Nissan Titan pickup.

The Tundra will utilize a 5.0-liter turbo-diesel V8 from Cummins to power its next-generation Tundra, which is likely to make its debut in 2016 according to Ward’s Auto. It’s unclear how or whether the engines will differ in specifications, but the Nissan unit is expected to make over 300 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque.

According to an inside source, the Cummins diesel could be a placeholder for the Japanese automaker. Toyota was working on an in-house Tundra diesel engine until the market collapsed in 2008. Depending on demand for the the Cummins-powered model, Toyota will weigh the possibility of reviving the project.

Previously we had reported that Tundra diesel models were already undergoing testing.

I wouldn't get too excited. This article has no source. There has been no official announcement from Toyota. The only thing I've heard is they don't plan on offering a diesel before 2017 because of new fuel economy and/or emissions standards.

I heard that Toyota was suppose to get the Duramax and Nissan was to get the Cummings for 2016. But like the original post in this thread there was no real evidence that it was true. Just what i heard through the grape vine. Either way it will still be awesome if they did get a diesel although i cant help laugh when i think of a one ton dually tundra rolling down the road. Seen the concept they had of them and boy where they UGLY. I wont be driving one diesels are just not the same anymore imo.

My sales guy called me asking me if I'm ready to trade in my 12 for the 16 when they come out with the diesel. He told me that they are supposed to get training on the diesel power plant soon. Not sure if he was blowing smoke at me or not but it got my hopes up.

There is something wrong here. Toyota already equips the LandCruiser 200 series sold everywhere but in North America with their excellent D4-D 4.5L twin turbo diesel engine. These engines range from the Australian outback and Africa through to the Siberian steppes. The LC200 and the Tundra share the same front end frame configuration.

1. So "trying to develop" really means "article author did not bother researching" since Toyota already (from motor mounts to ECU and transmissions) has everything except EPA sign-off for a diesel to go into the Tundra.

2. So why a Cummins, who really has little history with anything other than inline 6 cylinder engines? It's not like Toyota could not produce the D4-D V8 in their WV plant.

The Cummins is already EPA approved, none of the Toyota diesels are and Toyota would have to revamp their current diesels to make them approved. If it was something simple, then we'd already have Toyota diesels in the U.S.

Will Toyota beef up there suspension? Will the payload be the same, less, more? So many questions about this great but heavy engine.
