I have been looking for a good used Corolla in the '03 to '05 year range. I am wanting something with low mileage, loaded and 5 spd transmission. I found a real nice '03 for a reasonable price and I'm seriously considering buying it. I did google '03 Corolla issues' and the biggest problem seems to be the manual transmission. I found several sites talking about these cars having premature catastrophic failures of the manual transmission to the tune of $3000 or so. Anyone here have any experience with this? Know anyone that's had this problem? Is it a bunch of BS?

Thanks in advance,
Rod

I drive an '03 Matrix which I understand is the same as a corolla except for the body. With about 87k miles on the car I was driving cross country and had exactly such a catastrophic manual transmission failure. Stranded in Little Rock, Arkansas, it cost me almost $4k to fix at a Toyota dealership.
