Greetings;

New here but confused with term usage as AWD an 4WD? AWD all wheel drive to me means power to all wheels always. 4WD means to me selectible 4wd when needed. With the H/L I read AWD and 4WD as the same thing? Does the H/L come in AWD only not selectible 4WD? Please clarify

The H/L Non-hybrid is full-time AWD as a description, but Toyota calls it just 4WD. 50-50 front /rear proportioning traction 100% of the time. Never disengages to to 2WD.

The AWD is a Full-time 4WD. Though there are 2 settings. Normal which puts 50-50 to the wheels. And will disengage the rear wheels when loosing traction or sliding in the snow.

They also offer the ECT, which is a fine tune 4wd that will disengage the wheels that are slipping and put the power to the ones that are grabbing.

But as for the actual 4 Hi/Low and 2wd HI of a transfer case, does not exist on the Highlander.
