Hi all,

I just had had to share this old post from the 1st Gen Tundra side...its just too good to not. Anyway, I've been dealing with this exhaust noise coming from my driver side interior cabin when under any acceleration. It's been an annoyance that I've just lived with...and I'm willing to bet many others out there have this same problem and just don't know it!

Just checked my boot today and it is completely torn! Problem solved!
Here is the original post...definitely worth the read for a quieter cabin!

Enjoy!

Hi:
Thanks for the post, I think i have this problem on my Sequoia.
is it hard to replace this steering shaft seal? I checked on ebay, the OEM part cost around $30, but how much the shop will charge for the labor?
i just replaced one side header last week, the screws were too old, broken.. the shop spend over two days to finish the job. they charged me $700 for the labor..
will this steering shaft seal has the same risk to deal with the old screws issue?

thanks

Hangout, have you got up underneath your Sequoia to take a look? As for the replacement process, I've just placed an order online for the seal. Should get it in soon. It seems like the link I posted has some decent instructions. I plan to take pics and do my own write-up when I'm done.

Hangout,
My plan is to start working on it tomorrow. For now, here is a pick of the steering shaft. The vantage point is me looking up from the bottom of the vehicle. Just visualize the shaft going up to the steering wheel from underneath the Sequoia...this will help you find it hopefully. Just shine a light up the steering shaft and you will see the boot.

Just changed mine yesterday. REMARKABLE difference!
Me as well! It's sounds like a new vehicle. All I hear now is the shuttle roar of a solid Toyota V8!
I'll post a thread with a DIY and pics soon. There are some threads that have been done in the past, but the pics are lacking and the information is scattered.

Might be a long shot since this thread is pretty dated, but do you guys also hear the noise very quietly when idle? When I accelerate, the noise is very similar to what everyone else on the forum has been describing, similar to an exhaust leak. My seal is torn, hopefully I can get this new one in soon and see if that fixes it.

I made a post last year about a rigged fix for the torn seal on the steering shaft. The search function doesn't seem to be working at the moment, so I can't link it. I found the noise was the loudest when driving in the rain. You can certainly replace the entire seal but you must remove the steering shaft from the rack to do it. I decided to layer 3 or 4 silicone cupcake liners and zip tie them around the shaft, over where the torn seal is located. It made a significant difference in cabin noise levels.

So. I've had the same noise since I got this rig back in july of 2019. I think I even posted about it. Today - this afternoon, I popped the hood - saw where the drive shaft went straight down to the rack. Crawled under it - looked up, and BINGO. The Steering Boot was shot. Used a headlamp to get the light right. Pictures attached, for those wondering what they might be looking for.

Thanks, "Thriller" !!
