Painting the plastic side moldings and tailgate handle

I am thinking of painting the grey plastic molding on the side of my 03 Tundra and the tailgate handel is there any way for the plastic to be as glossy as the rest of the truck. Also which would look best with the chrome strip or with-out the chrome strip. My truck is a Dark Blue color.

The side mldgs have a textured surface they can be painted but never will look like the truck take a look at a 01-03 rav-4 bumpers they have the same texture and don't match up to the truck good mettalic paint looks even worse because of the high and low spots.I run a collision shop in Michigan and we specialize on Toyotas.

2003 tundra stepside v8 300 miles
tons of upgrade coming soon.

You can buy matching side moldings and tailgate handle from a dealer.

The handle is fairly cheap, like, under $50.00 but the side moldings are not. They are about $70.00 to $80.00 per section.

These items are from the limited model of Tundra.

I just put up a couple of pics of my truck with the BSM I got to replace the stock black. I used 1 3/8" white from a local wholesale auto trim place whose name was given to me by a body shop I've used. It cost $21 for the two 8' strips. Pretty cheap mod that I wish I'd done a long time ago. Huge props to ND1169 for giving me the idea in the first place!

Well it looks awesome! I got a few questions though...

How do they stick on, just with some double side tape? Did you have to trim the new molding to fit at all?

How long did it take to complete?

I assume the trim that came off of the bed didn't have any holes behind it, correct?

Lastly, did it come painted or did that cost you extra?

All good questions, Agent. I've been PMing with so many different members about this, I'd forgotten whether I posted about this or not.:D

Same kind of stuff that you'll find under the badges and factory BSM. I didn't have to trim much. I just had to cut it to length where the doors meet.

How long did it take to complete?
The longest part of the job is removing the gray sticky stuff under the stock BSM. I'd say total for both sides was 4-5 hours.

I assume the trim that came off of the bed didn't have any holes behind it, correct?
Correctomundo!

Lastly, did it come painted or did that cost you extra?
Fortunately, I found it in a white that was slightly brighter than the natural white on my truck. It isn't enough difference to merit the extra cost and potential for chipping/peeling IMHO. In the Cowles Products CATALOG it shows the following colors available:
01 - Black
02 - White
03 - Dark Blue
04 - High Gloss Black
05 - Red
06 - Maroon
07 - Brown
08 - Buckskin
09 - Gold
12 - Silver
14 - Lt. Green Metallic
15 - Lt. Blue Metallic
16 - Dk.Blue Metallic
19 - Firethorn
22 - Dove Gray
23 - Med. Beige
24 - OEM Gold
25 - Med. Blue Metallic
26 - Camel Beige
30 - Dk. Green Metallic
33 - Dk. Carmine Metallic
41 - Slate Gray Metallic
42 - Dk. Gray Fern Metallic
45 - Dk. Sandstone
48 - Dk. Briar Metallic
49 - Autumn Maple Metallic
53 - Gunmetal
54 - Dk. Red Metallic
55 - Sage Metallic
57 - OEM White
58 - Green Pearl
59 - Cashmere
60 - Frost White
61 - Red Pearl
62 - Sage Green
63 - Green Pearl - Honda
Hopefully, one would be close enough for you to use. Good luck and thanks for the compliments!

Thanks, TSA. I bet this would look great on the Stepside, too.

I got the following as a PM, so I thought I'd post it for everyone's benefit:
where did you purchase your side moldings, and how did your remove the existing ones, any modification needed after removal? or did the new ones fit directly.
I got them from a local place called Penn Industries, but I think the best idea is just to call your auto body shop and ask where they'd get BSM. I removed the stock BSM when it was about 100° outside and I'd left the truck in the sun, then just got one edge up using fishing line like the debadging, then just pulled it off by hand. No modifications other than cutting to length. I just put the new ones on after cleaning off all the gray sticky stuff from the stock BSM.

This bsm mod may be the single best one thus far!

If I had known that the bsm was only being held in place by the same adhesive as the badges I would have pulled them off when I skinned the badges, TRD stickers, et al. I just assumed that they used some kind of plastic fastener that required fairly large holes, similar to the TRD vinyl fender flares.

Thanks for posting all the info. I am about to go out and start ripping mine off! It is supposed to be 110'F today so it should aid in loosening up adhesive.

My truck is also 2001 and I did remove the small pieces of bsm that are on the bedsides this afternoon. Just thought I would start small and see how it looked; plus I wanted to get wax on that area as soon as I got it cleaned up. It went just as OKC had described in his post. The adhesive 'tape' rolled up pretty easily and I finished off the remains with some mineral spirits.

I like the look so much that when I get done taking the big pieces off the doors I may not even put color-keyed molding on. I may just keep it totally 'shaved.' I will post some pics when I get it all done.

There ARE three 1" square holes in each of the doors on each side of the truck.

When you take off the BSM from the doors, you will have a total of 12 holes to cover.

There are no holes in the bed, just tape!

I think a few people think they are strictly held on by tape, that is not the case!

 YIKES! I just realized that, although I mentioned the holes behind the cabin doors in my pics and in the previous thread regarding this mod, I didn't say anything about it in this thread. Thanks peid, for jumping in to clear it up!

On my 2000 the holes are only 5/8" in height, so a 1" strip of BSM will cover them. But if you don't use some kind of BSM the six holes per side are very noticeable.

OKC

Do you have to take the door panels off to get to the clips or just pull them off from the outside?

#22 ·
BSM clips are NOT really clips at all.....

I removed some of the drvr side door bsm today and the 'clips' really just seem to be guides. The protrusions on the bsm don't really hold it on at all. The adhesive tape strips do all the work. The holes seemed to have been cut just to serve as guides for the later alignment and application of the bsm, IMHO.

There is no reason to remove door panels; just get a plastic putty knife and a hair dryer--if it's not hot enough at your location--and go to town.

#23 ·
That is correct that you DO NOT have to remove the door panels.

The clips and holes are there just for alignment purposes according to OKCTundra. They don't even "snap" in or out, he said if it wasn't for the tape they would just fall out of the holes.

I might be doing this mod this weekend.:D

Peid - I knew that you would succomb to the temptation;)
Well folks, I did it this weekend.

I went and bought gloss black 1-3/8" side molding ($36 including tax) and came home to put it on.

Took off my first (and only) piece of body side molding, drivers side on the box.

I had defects in the paint like you wouldn't believe! They must put these side moldings on long before the paint is totally cured. I had a ridge in the paint that gouged my clay bar!

It also left an outline of the entire molding that would not "fade out" after time. I could feel the whole thing with my finger, not just my finger nail but my finger!

Man was I disappointed! Put the original molding back on and I will call it good enough!

Just want to give you guys a heads up. This mod might not work for you unless you want to repaint your doors. At that time, just fill the holes and repaint with no moldings, that would look the best!

I posted a picture of what my paint looked like after the molding was removed.

Here is the picture of the removed molding!

D@mn peid, that's really disappointing! I'm posting a pic of mine just after removal and Goof-Off. I know it doesn't help you any, but I didn't have any of that on mine. You can see kind of a ghost outline and that's why I took the pic. But that's more from paint age than anything else.
