My driver's side door check on my 09 Tundra is clicking and I can no longer tighten it because one of the bolt heads is stripped off. Considering replacing the entire door check unit. I have two questions:
  1. Do I need to remove the door panel to replace the door check? By examining the part, it appears that all I need to door is remove the two bolts on the door and the one on the frame, then replace the the bols and door check with the new unit. Is it as simple as that?
  2. Any other suggestions for repair as oppsed to replacement?

Yes, you need to pull the panel to replace the check if you have to replace it. And a new one is about $90.
You said the bolt head is stripped. As in the head of the bolt is rounded off? If thats the case, how are you going to removed the bolt in the first place? If it is just the head rounded off, if you do ever get it out wouldnt a new bolt fix the issue?
If its the threads on the bolt itself that are stripped you can try to replace the old bolt with a new one but you might want to run a tap in the hole first. I think its 8mm X 1.25 for the tap but just a guess. Or you could up size and go to say 9mm tap and a larger bolt.
Is the clicking coming from the check side inside the door or where it bolts to the A pillar? I wouldnt hesitate to oversize the check itself but if its on the frame side I would be careful with that option.
Post back exactly where and what the problem is and it might be easier for others to offer up the right suggestion.
