Factory or dealer installed security in the 00-03 Tundras?

I have noticed that on some of the Tundras I have looked at, some have a black square looking control in front of the tilt steering lever, while others simply have a red light either at that same place, or lower on the dash.

Here is the dash on a 01' I am considering and the light is a little lower than I have saw on some others. Can someone look at the photo below and tell me if that looks like a factory, dealer installed, or does it look like someone else other than the dealer or factory installed? If it was not factory or dealer- what all did they probably have to do to install? I am wondering, because I do not want a truck that has had its electrical system modified.

Thanks in advance!

That's not a factory install. If you look to the right of the dimmer knob, there's a rectangular knock out panel. That's where the mic for the glass break sensor & the status monitor light would be.
Not sure what they'd have to do, but if it has factory keyless entry on it, it wouldn't be much modification. If you search in the audio/electrical section for something like "$5 alarm upgrade", you'll find the instructions on how to upgrade a keyless system to the alarm (without a glass break sensor), and instructions on installing an LED.
It could also be an after-market alarm installed by an alarm shop.... if you take a look at the back of the remote, it should have an FCCID that starts with BAB (I can't remember the rest, but that should be enough). If not, its not a factory keyless/alarm.

Thanks. I was pretty sure it was not factory, being located in that spot, but I was not 100%. I have saw two other Tundras with the exact same light, but one had it in that little "knock out panel" you were referring to. I have saw a lot of Tundras with a black box in that area and that does appear to be factory.

My main concern was wondering if they had to remove that part of the dash to install that and did they have to do any re-wiring. As far as keyless entry- I am not sure about that. The truck is 1-owner and I have contacted him about the alarm system- to see what is going on with it.

Well, the guy that is selling it for the owner (a friend of his) replied and said that it was indeed a aftermarket alarm system.

Now I am wondering- what all was modified? Did they drill a hole in the dash there and if so, how did they "power it" and the alarm system in general? Did they "tap" into other wires or ..... ?

Has anyone else here install a aftermarket security system like this one appears and if so, what all was involved? Thanks in advance!

Also wondering.... did Toyota offer this system as a "dealer installed" accessory? Basically, is it possible that the dealer added this?

Surely someone has installed an aftermarket system? Sorry to sound impatient, but I am very interested to know what all is involved electrical wise in an addition like this.... thanks in advance! :ts:

What is the FCC # on the key fob, the FCC # will identify the manufacturer. For the 2003 there was only 1 factory option the RS3200 system, this system is plug and play and could also have been installed at a distributor, dealer or bought as an accessory kit (FCC # starts with BAB). In some non-TMS distributor regions the distributor may have installed a Securikey+ system (FCC # starts with ELV). In many parts of the country dealers install alarm systems or subcontract out alarm installs. The quality of alarm install is a result of the quality of work done by the installer.

Installing an alarm system requires wiring the alarm system harness to a number of connections such as the following:

Thanks. I am not sure of the "FCC" #, as I do not have the truck yet. Its one I am considering that is a 2001 model.

I guess the only thing I am really wondering about- does a system like this require alot of modifications of the electrical system... meaning did they have to add alot of wires or "move" any of the original wires.

Thanks. That is what I was afraid of....

That is a "Secuikey" upgrade that was offered through both the Gulf States Toyota and Southeast Toyota Regions ONLY.

Granted it basically IS an aftermarket system, but it's only installed by the dealers or the regional ports themselves.

Only problem is if you need parts for the system, then you have to call or go to a dealer in the region that it was from. And usually, the ports stop carrying the parts after 7 years or so so they become obsolete.

Call me at my dealership with the VIN number of the truck and I can check into it for you. 1-800-521-8101

Thanks Chris. The truck was actually bought new in Columbia, South Carolina, so that would explain that. Was it normal though for them to put the light in that spot- requiring a hole in the dash there? I was just puzzled as to why they did not put in that "knock out" plate next to the cargo light switch....

Also- would any tampering with the original wiring have of taken place with the installation of this system?

Chris- also that makes sense. I was finally able to look at another with the same option. It is in Florida. It has the light in the exact same place.

Puts everything in perspective now. Thanks! Attached is a photo of that truck.... look closely and you can see it on this truck as well.

I can't see it in the second picture. It's a little to small to make it out. In the first picture is where I see them on the Tundras that come in from our port in Houston, TX. I have seen them put in the knock out plugs also. It's all about wherever whoever is doing the job wants to put it I guess.

But you're right. A knock out plate would seem more logical.

The kits are pretty much "plug and play" that I am aware of.

Thanks. Yeah, the one in the second photo is hard to see there, but in the original photo, it is very visible and it is definitely in the same place. The first photo is of the Tundra that I will probably be buying on Friday.

Since I posted that photo above, I have saw yet another Tundra with the light there- again- in the southeast - a Florida truck.
