Can anyone vouch for the space between the seat and the dash?

I think it would be really close!!!

If anything modding the seat or shifter would be "easier" than moving the shifter to the column.. For all I know, the shifter can be placed anywhere the wires will let it go.... I wouldn't want to push it forward... but if i had to tilt it...

Needless to say, I probably want the bench seat more than its worth... But the idea of having the wife sit that close... well that make it worth it

Didn't take pics (kinda rushed today).
It's about 12 5/8" of space, between the base of the seat and the dash (along the floor, on the tranny hump). And the seat itself is about 7 1/2" high.
You mentioned that this might be more trouble than it's worth and I have to agree.
Looking at my bench seat, it would be rendered pretty useless as a seat, if I had a shifter assembly on the floor.
Ya kinda need the open floor to use the center section as a seat.
It's a small, uncomfy seat to begin with. Add in not having anywhere to comfortably rest your feet and no one would wanna sit there.

I have never looked into the push button shifters. I am not sure what has that kind of system in it to swap into the Tundra. It would be cool to mount it to the dash and have it up and out of the way.

Thanks PoPo!!

I think it comes down to IF the attching points are all there, plus the carpet being complete under the console. The Shifter is not a huge deal.. If it takes up 5-6 inches of space then a child/ small adult can sit there. It would be really cool to find a truck to pick off of. Maybe even find a console styl truck to look at before I tear into my CM..

Its to bad that I can't just go outside and look at my Tundra to see what would work. RIght now it will have to be just a loose plan.. Unless someone else wants the bench seat as much as I do.

The shifters I was talking about are universal type. You find them at places that sell parts for hot rods. Probably summit has them or jc whitneys.
Have you advertised locally for someone who may want the console and would swap parts with you?

Just dropping in to wake up this thread.

I've been digging through the EPC and I think it is easier than it seems. It is so easy that Toyota doesn't even identify what shifter a truck has based on the VIN. I suspenct the idea was to let the dealers configure the front seating arrangement.

I'm pretty sure the column is the same whether it has a shifter or not. I've found a complete column in a wrecker but it is good to know that I'd be able to re-use keys, the airbag etc. from the original vehicle.

The shift cable snakes down the column, runs under the carpet and exits the body in exactly the same place as the floor shifter. From outside the truck both systems are identical.

The driver and passenger seats are identical in both versions of the truck.

The center console mounting is the same as the center seat module which has its own shuolder belt. There are no seatbelts to mount seperately.

There is an ashtray which replaces the void in the dash where the center console previously connected.

A new carpet (or some other way to cover the big hole on the transmission tunnel) is required.

I'd welcome any more feed back, especially from anyone who has actually had one of these interiors apart. I know that more than a few of these column shifters have broken over the years. Perhaps someone has swapped one and has some insight.

Dealers have never been left to configure the seat option. Not all options are in the VIN.
I'm sure you are right. I was speculating that they may have been designed with that thought in mind.

Generally, if you have a Toyota VIN you can get the model number ie USK56L-CRTSKA that will tell you many of the most important features ( I.e cab style, engine, transmission, shifter location etc) but in the case of the Tundra, shifter location is always shown as 'floor shift' even on the regular cabs. I find that interesting.

I'd actually be really curious to hear how hard it is to replace the center seat with an actual center console. I've been looking at trading in my Tacoma for a Tundra, and I hate the idea of giving up my center console/shifter for a center seat that'll never get used and the column shifter. I've been looking at F150s too, but have at least seen a handful of people online replace their center seat with a console they got on ebay, and said it only took an hour. I'd still have to deal with the column shifter, but F150s must come in models where the center console is separate from the shifter, because as far as tundras it looks like if you have the center console, it has the buil in shifter. I feel like I've found the perfect truck for a good price, and if it had the center console I'd probably be driving out soon to take a look at it.

I guess my other curiousity, would there be any problem with the rear built in air vents, or do they hook up exactly the same?
