I've been in contact with Amsoil technical reps about this one, and they've updated their TSB as of June 30, 2009 to reflect their answer.

Amsoil no longer recommends the EaO09, EaO10, EaO57 oil filters for TOYOTA/LEXUS built engines for the extended 25,000 mile drain interval. The only way they will endorse the EaO filter for our trucks is if we use them at OEM drain interval recommendations. Even in that case, they still recommend using the comparable WIX 51348 instead of the EaO57, to save you some money. No sense in paying $16+ for the EaO filters anymore.

I was wondering why they removed the EaO listing from their website when you use the lookup for parts.

I found a guy on E-bay who sells the Wix filter for our trucks by the box. I picked up 12 for $52 with shipping. I change the filter every 6 months and change the oil once a year.

That's about the same price extended to preferred customers/dealers, $5.xx/ea. Not bad for a 12 micron filter.

I was inquiring their technical guys why the EaO57 wasn't on the parts look-up for the 4Runner 2UZ-FE, but it was on there for the Tundra 2UZ-FE. Then I stepped on a landmine. Bummer since I JUST changed the oil on my Tundra, RAV4, and my brother's 4Runner using EaO57, EaO10, and EaO57 filters respectively. :(

Oh well, I guess I'll be saving some cash on my next OTI. Using WIX and Amsoil 5w-30 XL, my oil changes will now be around $35. :proud:

Do we have any reason to believe the 4.7 is prone to sludge? I know there were a few specific Toyota engines (I believe some of the 4-cyl models?) that are/were prone to sludge. I've never heard of a chronic problem with the 4.7.

Shooting from the hip, I'm betting that the operating temp of 190* goes a long way to keeping sludge down, plus the 6.5 qt. capacity.

I've never heard of it on the 2UZ-FE. Yes, the Sienna, Camry, and Corolla 4 bangers may have had sludge. But not the Toyota v8. I'm guessing the not recommended for all Toyota/Lexus engines clause is just a blanket. Also, keep in mind Amsoil is referring to the 25k mile OTI over the course of 1 year.

Interesting change.

I use the Amsoil filter (Ea057) and synthetic oil. I also change it at 5000 mile intervals. I would never run oil or a filter for even 10,000 miles... it just doesn't seem right.

I remember when I was in my late teens I saw this guy changing his motorcycle oil. It looked way clean. I think he said he only ran it like 500 or 1000 miles. I asked him why he would change oil so frequently? He said "this is the blood of the motor" and that has stuck with me.

So maybe I spend a little more on the way but I may get longer life. Don't know, but it sounds good to me. Thanks for the info.

I just had an Amsoil filter installed on my tundra about 2k ago running the 10w-30 Xl. I'll change the filter at 7,500. Should be fine then. I wouldn't recommend leaving an oil filter on any vehicle for 25K.

Leaving any oil filter on for 25k regardless of how good the oil or filter is would be against any grain of logic and sensibility. Even with a bypass filtration setup you would have to periodically change out the filter(s).

Reading that TSB, I'm willing to bet the oil pressure sender is not a 0 psi type like on many other cars, in that a greater threshold of minimum oil pressure is required to keep it's contacts open. I'm not aware of the 1.8l corolla engine and the 4.7l V8 being prone to sludge. So far I've pulled apart two higher mileage neglected 1ZZFE engines and they didn't look sludged to me.

One can still purchase the EAO57 filter for the tundra. the only thing is that its not listed when looking at the auto roster on left column.

The UZ series is not prone to sludge, gotta love how specific that article was about what Toyota/Lexus engines or vehicles have reached "epidemic proportions "

Remember, it's 25K OR 1-year, whichever comes first. From what I understand, it's time that kills most filters, not debris...of course, if you had enough debris in your engine to clog a filter... I have seen oil pickup screens clogged with sludge and I have seen several oil pickups with the pop-up bypass opened due to debris clogging a screen (like nylon timing gear parts clogging the screen).
