Greetings! First time poster here, so please be gentle :)

I have a 2005 DC Limited 4.7 4x4 with 177K. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve noticed an unidentified noise that only appears after the truck is warmed up and I’ve been driving for about 20 minutes. On my morning commute (5ish miles), I don’t hear anything, but if I drive longer than that, the sound gets progressively louder and more frequent. It doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the speed I’m driving and also doesn’t seem to be something in the suspension, as I will hear it on completely smooth roads. To my novice ear, it sounds like a door opening/closing or something slapping up against the underside of the body.

My mechanic friend drove the truck and did a cursory look over. He ruled out the suspension and he thinks the driveshaft looks good. He suggested that maybe the pins were out on the front brake pads, but upon inspection, it’s not that, either.

This video is me driving in my neighborhood at about 20 MPH.

In this one, the mic is near the floor and I’m going about 50 MPH.

Any suggestions on what to inspect?

Trans mount?
In the first vid are you talking about the more substantial thumps? Or the wom-wom-wom in the 2nd vid?
Thanks for the comment. It’s actually the same sound in each video although it‘s not really coming across as such. In the first, it’s the deeper sound that starts at around the 10 second mark.

Searched the forum for Transmission Mount/Crossmember and that’s worth checking. I’ll report back tomorrow.

Is it 2WD or 4WD. Have you replaced the carrier bearing? I would hear strange sounds and when I put the truck up on jack stands and put it into gear I finally found my sound was the carrier bearing. Have you checked your bushings for your power steering? Easy to see if it moves if you cycle the steering and have someone look at the mount for movement.

4x4 (just updated original post).

I’ve had this truck for 4+ years and 25k miles so don’t know its full history. Are you talking about the bushings on the steering rack? I put a new rack on last summer so I doubt it’s that but will look.

That got me thinking, though: Maybe it’s something with the steering column…the wheel has a fair amount of looseness side-to-side (~ .5-1 inch). It also has just a bit of play if I pull up on the wheel.

Carrier bearing looks good. Just a bit of movement but the rubber seems to be in good shape.

If any of these are the culprit, would they only make noise after the truck is warmed up? That part is puzzling to me.

Well, based on the videos it doesn't sound mechanical at all. It sounds like something is loose and smacking the underside. Maybe the skid plate is missing a bolt and flopping around, or a cv axle is coming apart or something. I would start by crawling underneath and just start pulling on stuff to see what's loose and do a front to back bolt check.

As far as the warming up part I have no clue. Maybe when the fan clutch engages the blades are hitting something intermittently under the hood? Is there anything you've noticed that triggers it? Braking, turning, hitting a bump, etc. ?

I had a similar sound once. The bushings in my tailgate were gone to the point it as bouncing around any chance it got lol. Quick and easy fix for me. It sounds body noise suspect as it doesn’t seem to follow engine accel/de-acceleration. Good luck

Check over the exhaust. Heat does strange things to parts. Frank O.
