How to tell if timing belt has been changed???

9887 Views 6 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  HOGWILD
Is there an easy way for me to tell if the timing belt has been changed on my 2002 Tacoma? I just bought it from a dealer and they don't have the maintenance records. It has 100,000 miles so I would like to find out if I need to have the timing belt changed. Any help/ideas are appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't know of a way to tell if it's been changed, without disassembling the timing covers, etc, at which point you might as well install a new belt.

Most people change the belt at 100,000 miles or more, so if I were you, I would assume it has not been changed.
I had mine changed at the dealer and they put a sticker on the body under the hood showing the mileage that it was changed at.

I don't know if this will apply to all Toyota dealerships, but mine put on a sticker showing when the timing belt was changed.

The sticker is included with every Toyota timing belt that I have ever installed, and anyone who is the least bit careful about the job will place that sticker somewhere so that the timing belt status can be checked. If you don't have a sticker or service records, then I would say it is impossible to tell if the timing belt has been changed. Yes, if you tore it down completely so that you could see the belt, you might be able to guess by its condition (markings on the belt) whether it had been changed, but by then you'd have done most of the work already.
Thanks for all of the responses. I checked under the hood and was not able to find a sticker, so I guess I will just assume that it has not been changed.
I would check with dealer and get a VIN# maintenance inquiry done!! could pull up info, i did one on my 93 PU and they told me quite a bit that was done at dealership on my truck prior to me buying it!!
