I seriously do just about everything they recommend here: http://www.hypermilingforum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=3#post3
Everything but the drafting thing. It's just so not safe I can't justify doing something that I just can't stand other people doing.

Here's what they recommend:
1. maintain proper air pressure
2. removing items from your car that are not needed, keep excess weight out of the bed etc.
3. keeping your car properly maintained and Changing your air filter on a regular basis
4. anticipating when you have to brake and braking at a slower rate
5. don't drive aggressively
6. Use Neutral going down hills or when anticipating a red light
7. drafting
8. don't leave your car in idle longer than 10 seconds

I have a very extremely short drive to work each morning, maybe 5 minutes, lol. And on the weekend I drive to my other job maybe 10 miles. I chose where I live pretty wisely.:p But I've gotten an average of 14.5 mpg when driving like this Hypermiling forum recommends. Pretty sad. Compared to the 14 mpg I get when I drive like a maniac. Anyways, I'll keep it up for another month and see what kind of results I get after that time.

Anyone else try Hypermiling?

I don't think I would do the nuetral thing. Also, have you priced a starter lately? I would not turn the car off if I had to idle over 10 seconds. Most of all, If I had to drive that short a distance to work, I would not even worry about the price of gas. Don't you have a remote start kit? I would just quit using that.

I just use my SCANGAUGE II and watch INSTANT MILEAGE as especially TODAY's MILEAGE. It helped me go from 14/15 MPG to 17/18 MPG around my town.

So how many miles a year you putting on that car in Va Bch? Sounds like a relatively low number from what you are saying. My average is about 15K a year but a good amount of it right now is on the highway for a weekly commute. I can average between 17-18 normally, sometimes down to 16's in winter.

I think the only accessory that makes sense right now is the scangauge, I'm planning on getting one here soon, and using it to maximize my mileage. I may also go with the electric fan, but I think I will wait till after I get the scangauge and see what pulling the fan off does to the mileage.

I've been driving gently for a while now, along with doing a few things on the list... and I haven't seen much (if any) improvement. Actually, the warmer temps seem to be helping the most. This last tank has lasted me the longest, and I haven't done anything different. The warmer temp is the only thing different. I don't think my southern truck likes the Iowa winters.

The recommendations from that forum range from the painfully obvious to ridiculous and illegal.
I know!

It's like some people never knew that a properly maintained vehicle runs better than a jalopy with a dusty air filter. They had more suggestions, but I thought most of them belongd in the "Maintain your vehicle blah blah" catagory.

Theo nly ones I've actually been testing are the Braking, Neutral, and Idle ones. The other mentioned strategies I already did every day anyways. But I've seen some people report some outragious MPGs, such as a Prius getting 70mpg and a Tacoma getting 35mpg.

T100_2_Tundra, I drive an avg of 6k a year, don't laugh:proud:. I bought the truck in Feb'05 and currently have 28800mi. My oil changes are usually every 4 months, but even that is only 2000mi. Some people I work with drive the HRBT each day, I couldn't imagine doing that.... my moderate roadrage would turn me bipolar:tape2:

I think the coasting in Neutral is mainly for manual transmissions, but I do usually slip into neutral when sitting at a long light. Don't use drive-through (bank, fast food, ec), BIG waste of gas.

My annual mileage is about 7K per year. I've owned the truck three years now - My first year I got an average of 16 MPG, the second year I got between 18-22 MPG, and so far this year I'm at 13 or so....bad year for mileage. Electric Fan burnt up (lost 3-4 MPG) and Unichip problems (running too rich) until it finally failed just last week. ALso changed tire sizes..... woe is me.....

Talk about that HRBT headaches and add the Merrimac to it. When I was working I drove both regularly. My highest mileage year was just under 30K (all in a state provided van) driving 'round and 'round this area. Wouldn't do it today for anything....
