When I first read this thread I figured that most new Tundra owners were probably just imagining all the attention. No way that one new truck would be such a big deal to non-truck people or other truck owners that are probably loyal to what they already own, especially the Ford and Chevy guys. I got the Tundra because I needed a truck, it is made by Toyota, and it is much more comfortable / versatile than the Tacoma. I don't really think about it being a new truck design or anything special, it is just my new truck and I like it the same as anyone would like a new Camry, BMW, or whatever.
I just thought back over the past few weeks and now I can see that my Tundra has definitely made at least a few waves. It started with the people at work wanting to see it and ride in it which is fairly normal for any new vehicle. Then the guys at the LINE-X dealership were very curious about it with several stopping in to the shop just to look at it and ask me about it. Then there were about 3-4 times where another truck would pass me on the highway only to slow down and then come up again on the other side. At first I took this for aggressive driving so I would punch the gas and leave them behind but now I guess it is possible they were just wanting to look the truck over.
Then today I was in a parking lot waiting for the wife to come out when some shifty looking guy cruises down my aisle giving me a dirty look the whole time. He parked and his girlfriend went towards the store but he started to walk towards me, which I thought was odd since I was parked in a spot at the end far away from everything else. I figured he had me confused with someone else or maybe he wanted to start some kind of trouble so I got ready for him, but then he stopped, looked me over a few times, then walked back down the aisle. I couldn't figure out what it was all about until I saw him stop again to look at a Chevy which was parked down near the store. His girlfriend said something about the Chevy but he shook his head no and then pointed to me, then they walked into the store with her frowning and him smiling. Guess he has a fight on his hands before he can get a Tundra...
Just a few hours later I was in another store parking lot loading my bags into the backseat when some guy came up and asked if he could look at my truck while it was open. Said he had a brand new Camry and an 04 Tundra but was thinking about getting a new Tundra soon. He looked it over several times and we talked for 15 minutes before he drove off.
I don't mind answering a few questions or having a few people look at the truck once in a while but to be honest I will be happy when the newness wears off and it is just another vehicle on the road. Attention comes in all flavors including the bad kind and I don't need anything happening to me or my new Tundra so I would prefer to get out of the spotlight. Probably won't help matters when I install all the upgrades and gizmos...
