JL Audio 8" vs 10"

Hey all! What would everyone here suggest I go with. A JL Audio 8wv2 or JL Audio 10w3v3? I am going to build my own version of the JL audio stealth box. What are the sound differences in the two. I am not looking for too much bass but just enough. I will be running the sub with a Alpine V-Power MRP-M450 single channel amp. I will also be running MB Quart DSF 216 components up front and MB Quarts DKF 116 in the rear powered by a Alpine V-Power MRP-F250 4 channel amp. I already have the amps component speakers etc. just want to get some feedback on the jl's before i order it. Thanks in advance.

Well, if you have the space, then go with the 10". Most often 2 8's = 1 10". Unless it is a super 8 like Digital Designs or W7.

make sure the sub will work with that amp at 2ohms to get the full 400w. Why are you going with JL? Have you looked at Elemental Designs, Assendant audio, Image Dynamics, CDT, etc? They may give the same or in most cases better performance than the JL at a greatly lesser cost.
Cool thanks for the advice. Reason I am going witn JL is because I used them in the past and like the quality. I will look into the other brands and see if any of them interest me.

That's not really true. Even with 2 8's, you're looking at a LOT more cone area. Granted, the 8's won't dip quite as low as a 10", 90% of the time, they'll have more output.
Ordered the ED SQ10. Should be here next week. Will post pics once my system is complete. Thanks again for all the input.

Yeah, I figured someone would say that. But on the same amp with 2 8's and the same speaker in a 10, I have always found that the 10 is better in overall ouput and SQ. You have to drive the 8's harder to get the same sound.

Not really, the 2 8's have the capability of moving quite a bit more air resulting in higher output levels. SQ is so subjective, I won't touch that comment. 2 8's vs. a comparable 10", 8's should win hands down.
the 8's will give you the tite clean bass then 10's will also give you the clean bass with more punch..the 8's will bottom out if it hits to hard
Installed my ED SQ10 in a custom box in the center console. Sounds awesome. This woofer rocks.

Dont spread around that horrible info around here.
What horrible info?
That 8's give *tite* clean bass and 10 is also for clean bass and 8's will bottom. All that is false to some extent. 8's will not bottom if used correctly, yes they have tight bass, but will also drop a little bottom ( they are not just for tight bass). Also, depending on what 10" you use or what 8" you use, they will both produce tight clean bass that will drop bottom.
Good point. Any of you happen to know what color wire is positive on the rear speaker doors? On my 2004 tundra DC both sides are red/white. Just wanted to make sure I wired it correctly.
I just got a JL 8 w3. I cant imagine the shealth box sounding too muc better. I am sure it can play deeper but I got everthing for 550 vs 600 for the stealth and and another couple for an amp.
I’ve been round and round and round on the discussion of what speaker sounds better, what hits harder, etc for a long time. If you really want to open your eyes, try playing “name the size and brand of that driver” in a blind listening test. I haven’t ever seen anyone get all of the answers correct when we’ve done this in the past.

As an interesting side note, some of the most successful SQ competition cars in the country use multiple 5” subwoofers wired usually in pairs. The Reaper 1 and Reaper 2 out of Expressive Audio in Houston both used 5’s. Mickey’s Eclipse uses 2 5’s, Dale Fontenot’s T-Bird used 5’s, etc, etc, etc. Some of the loudest vehicles in the world only use 4 15’s with a TON of power on them and they're in to the 170's and 180's.

The bottom line is a well designed driver in the proper enclosure will outperform a larger driver in an improperly designed enclosure every time. This is one case where it’s not the size of the driver but how you use it!
