Something I learned from the diesel truck forums, where they are big on mods and testing, is stick with the paper filter if you can. If you have to have more air for combustion, then use something else, but the paper is the best at filtering. When it is clean (new), it passes plenty of air. So just replace it more often. The other types, pass more air, and more particles, witch leads to poor oil analysis (silica's, I think), not good for motor. I had an oiled foam filter for a while, till I read to hold it up toward the sun. You could see little pin holes in it. I went back to paper, and changed it often. One of the signs with the diesel was to here the turbo whistle. So when I didn't here it, I changed filters. :)
