New TSB Coming For The High Pitched Whistle Some People Hear Under Fast Acceleration

Brought my 06 Tundra Dcab 4x4 into the dealer for the ball joint recall today, but also had them look at a few other things that were bugging me.

I asked them to see if they could fix the high pitched whistle sound my truck has always made under heavy acceleration. Well when I came back at the end of the day to pick up my truck, the service writer said that the tech definately heard the sound on the test drive, but could not find out what it was.

So the service writer said he inquired with corporate and was told that Toyota will be issuing a TSB for this in a few months. I have noticed a few threads of other Tundra owners hearing this whistling sound when they accelerate. So keep an eye out for the TSB. Looks like we might be able to get this fixed! It was not the biggest deal in the world, but the sound was kind of annoying....

Sounds like the possible misalignment of the belt that others have been complaining about. To date, I don't think anyone has been able to get it corrected. I've got 2000 miles on mine, and haven't noticed it. Hopefully they find out what is causing it (bad belt???) so we can get on with our lives while enjoying our new rides.
i thought it sounded kinda cool. almost like a blower :D

Yeah, it sounds kinda like the KO3 on my Passat spooling up to 16 psi;)

 yea, reminded me of a blower, but also had me thinkin a belt was about to fly off:confused:
Re: New TSB Coming For The High Pitched Whistle Some People Hear Under Fast Acceleration

..........you are kidding right?
it is air.
when you step on the gas pedal you are telling the truck to administer more gas. in return the engine also requires AIR to mix with the gas to detonate..hence the "whistle" you hear. If you dont like it, let your air filter get VERY dirty and the problem will be cured.
The whistle gets louder only if you slam the pedal. It's just more air going through the throttle body. I'm willing to bet if this TSB comes out, your intakes are going to become more restrictive in the process.

2nd that. My 92 300ZX does the same thing when i get on the engine. it is a good sound that tells me that there is a non-restrictive flow of air going into the engine. this also tells me that i do not need to waste my $$ on any "air charger" type upgrades to get better air flow.
Or your airbox is not clamped down properly. My 05 is a bear to get seated correctly, and will clamp down incorrectly allowing unfiltered air to enter intake.

My 06 DC limited does this same thing. I have been reading post trying to find what it is. the closest thing so far is from LILwillys thread. this is the first thread that actually describes it like my issue, Whistle under heavy accel. i disagree with the comment(s) concerning the air-box/airflow. Cover on or off i can hear it and it does not get louder with it off. I have been trying to figure it out off an on since i bought it back in Oct06. However lately i have just been turning up the tunes:tu:

Question PWADE92-- Does yours get quieter after the truck warms up and you jump on the gas a few times?

I ask because if i drive slow all day and jump on it once and a while the whistle is there most the day. if i jump on it a whole bunch, say every street light the whistle seems to be not as loud as the truck gets hotter. I also can hear it very very faint at idol if i stick my head in the engine comp. The dealer i took mine to said "hey i never noticed it but mine does the same thing and i do not know what it is". I guess now that you got me thinking about it again, the next step is to pull the belt and see what I get.

I got my 06 DCab in October also. My whistle noise only occurs when I accelerate harder than normal. It does not matter if it is cold or warmed up all the way. I have never heard it when it is idling and I have been under the truck with it idling after I have changed my oil to check for leaks. It does not really seem to do it from idle up to about 2000 rpm's, but as soon as I go from 2000 rpm's on up and until I let off on the gas and get to a more normal cruising speed/rpm's, it is whistling away!

I think it is coming from the exhaust. That is what the service writer speculated on also. But like I said, it is not a big deal and I would have just ignored it, but if there is a fix that is not to intrusive, then I am going to do it.... it would just be nice to hear the smooth sounding power of my Tundra's V8 without the annoying whistle sound!!:tu:

Why does the sound of the intake gulping air bother you? ;)

Besides, you let those techs mess with your truck on a non-problem then you'll end up with a pile of junk.

I learned a long time ago to keep my cars and trucks away from the damn dealers garage. They live a longer, healther life that way.

I agree with you that I hate leaving my truck with any mechanic. I always feel that it might create more problems than what I brought it in for!!

But I am pretty sure this "whistling" noise is not the intake gulping air. I wish it was...
Re: New TSB Coming For The High Pitched Whistle Some People Hear Under Fast Acceleration

That noise sounds to me like the serpentine belt is not quite aligned during higher rpm operation. Could one of the accessory brackets be flexing under load allowing the pulleys to go out of alignment for a short time? For at time back in Feb when it was colder it sounded just like it was slipping and the noise was horrible. So bad in fact that people around me could hear it as well. I will also acknowledge that I cannot reproduce it while the vehicle is stationary.

I agree this is no air box noise, I have a 04 DC and hear the same when I get on it a lil bit. I think that it is the belts slipping. I will be paying attention to this thread.
I have the same problem....but mine just sounds like the intake or TB whistling...please keep us updated!! Makes my truck sound like a blower's installed :)
DANG! FINALLY I see a post about this. I had always wanted to one, know what that sound was and two, post a thread on here to see if anyone had it too but I never came around to it. But its always at high RPM's though. And ever since I put in a straight pipe in place of my muffler, it got even louder!

If you ask me, I like it. I think it sounds like a turbo spooling up! haha:cool::tu: Everyone that gets in my truck says the same thing.
Mine does it too. I could be wrong, but I thought I remember reading somewhere in the owner's manual that this noise was completely normal. I'll see if I have time tonight to look it up and post again if I do.
