I got into an accident a little while ago which shifted my rear end and broke bent my leaf spring and shocks. I replaced them and put on bilstien 5100 shocks. But i have noticed about a month of driving that i have a wha wha wha noise from the rear is not all the time but it happens every time i drive so i dont think its tires. Also more on highway speeds when i press on the brake my rear is hopping or bouncing a good amount especially if i have cargo in the bed Is it possible my axle is bent? As far as driving it rides fine drives straight jut i got that noise and as soon as you press on the brakes at 40+ the rear bounces pretty good amount. Please Help.

Its entirely possible its bent, the only true way to tell is to compare the axle to another one. As for the shafts, they arent exactly easy to pull as you must remove the rear wheel cylinders and checking the shafts for out of round is hard-unless its noticeable only spinning them on a lathe would see. I would check out a frame shop and have them check it tbh.

Friend of mine has a 4runner and same thing happened to him, bodyshop said rear axle was total loss as it was bent and he got a new one.

Had a dodge ram like that in the shop about 3 months back. We replaced shocks, springs, and the whole axle to be on the safe side. Mounts to the frame at least were ok.

Could be the wrong leaf springs, they arent on tight enough, whole host of issues really.

Well I think I found the noise issue just jacked it up and pulled the wheel off and ran the car about 50 and it sounds like it's comming from the outer axle bearing on driver side I'm going to take it to the shop Monday have a second opinion see what they say maybe I bent the axle and the bearing is shot causing the noise I really don't think the housing is bent but it might be worth just going to the slavage yard and picking up an rear end depending on price.

as far as the leaf springs there all tight and made sure there the correct ones for my truck.

What does the phrase axle hop mean? Bent causing the rear to bounce?

Shouldnt have any issue, t100 and tundra use the same rearend-only different is the gearing which just swaps out.

As for axle hop, axle hop is when you take off it will feel like the rearend is hopping along. If you powerbrake it it can be truly felt as the bed and rear will be jumping like nuts.

I had a similar problem in another truck and it turned out the rear was fine, leaf springs and leaf spring bushings needed to be repaired/replaced.

Check the low hanging fruit so the shop doesn't have to charge you for it.

U-bolts tight?
Leaf spring bolts & shackle bolts tight?
Leaf spring bushings intact?
Shocks in good working order?
Tires balanced?

Then dig in to the axle. Does one side feel unusually hot after driving? Does the pumpkin feel unusually hot? (You have to have a reference, tho...it's not uncommon for the differential in any vehicle to become uncomfortably warm!)

Any fluid anywhere you're not used to seeing?

A buddy of mine recently had somebody tag him at about 30mph, they hit directly on the wheel...bent the links, bent the housing, somehow didn't bend the semi-float axle enough to break it, but it built an awful lot of heat during a slow drive to the shop. The bend also chewed up the side gears in the differential, and the splines on the halfshaft.

If you don't have a Tundra or T100 rear end near you, I know of one in the Denver area, not sure of the condition tho...it was a rollover.

U joints are good and all the bushings and mounts are tight and there brand new 5100 shocks on all 4 corners I will have to test the heat thing out Tom morning.

As far as swaping a rear end if I need too any year I should look for that has a LSD in it and the gearing would be fine for the 6 clyinder? Thanks for for your help

well i took it to the shop today and there telling me that my axle shaft is bent which im not to surprised but they want 750 to fix it 400 something for the shaft oil and 2 hours labor. I found a 04 tundra that was involved in a roll over and talk the guy down to 650 for the whole rear end. My question is will bot directly up and is the gear ratio going to be different between a v6 2002 to a v8 2004 and if so how will it affect the driving. also how do you tell if the rear end has a lsd in it? im going to look at the rear tomorrow anything to keep my eyes out for?

Oh it will bolt right up and you can reuse your gears as well.

Replacing an axleshaft is costly b/c all of the brake parts and bearings are pressed onto it and its a pain to do toyota axles.

I were you, if the other rear is in good shape then do the swap.

If it has an LSD there will be a tag on the back iirc or you try and spin both tires and it should spin them same direction not opposite.
