ok guys, here's the low down. Took the truck is about a year ago, with about 15xxx miles, asking them to look at the "hazy" spots. They said it was from me peeling off the pin stripe? i just shrugged it off.

"Present Day" last week taking the car in for "warranty" work, they made me do the damn pedel recall, pissed me off not that my truck drives like ***, but anyways, talk to the service manager, he said he'll get a rep down to take a look at it. Rep comes down and looks at it at the dealership body shop. I use to paint cars a couple years back, so i told them it's a single stage paint, and that wet sanding and buffing it doesn't work. The rep agreeed, and said toyota is aware of the problem. I had a total of 8 spots that i knew about, they came out with a natural light light, and shined it, they found a crap load more. The painter said it's under the paint, it's something with the prep work, that's making it come up. That's what i figured to. The rep said, toyota said to do whatever is necessary to fix it. The truck is now in the body shop at 36,XXX miles for a entire repaint, but the roof???? i was like wtf...but they said if the roof starts doing it they would...the truck has the dark grey spots on every panel. So now im driving a stupid *** corolla around for the mean time...

good job on toyota backing up there product, the paint is only covered under 3yrs/36,000 miles, i took it in for recall at 35,954...so it's covered. But my service writer, and service manager, and the rep...:tu: for taking care of a customer.

*cliffs* - truck is getting repainted with 2 stage paint, base and clear coat per body shop, since they don't do single stage :D

Hi I bought a 08 Tundra (WHITE) in Dallas about a year ago. How can I tell if I havfe a single stage paint and need a repaint?

Thanks!

zach
um.....if its original white paint then its single stage. if its got defects in the paint then it needs to be addressed. its kinda simple. if you dont see anything wrong with your paint, then it doesnt need anything.

update....got my truck back..so far not to happy.....first they put TRD stickers on my truck saying i had stickers when it came in...i was like no...I DON"T HAVE STICKERS....so that was last week..they said the paint needs to fully cure before trying to peel off the stickers...after inspecting the paint job...i have trash all in the paint, and the bad thing is that they painted over little rock chips, didn't sand. it down...it's not toyotas fault, just the body shop. So i'm complaining right now to them. I rather have rock chips, then have, chips painted....grrrrrrr

yes unfortunately thats acceptable to most of the population so thats the standard they do it to. refuse to take it and tell them you want it done right and eventually they will spend the time to do it right. repaints always suck. the independent body shop i go to has a high standard and ive been going to them for years and i have not found a single speck on mine...and i have looked it over and washed it by hand multiple times. the only thing i did find was one tape edge that was detectable along the door edge but a fine wet sanding for a moment got rid of it and now its not detectable. unfortunately, thats not the norm. when my wifes benz was repaired afer an accident by the benz/porsche/rolls/bently/maserati/etc place it looked like chit. went back 6 times till they finally got it right. i can still find spots in not 100 percent on but its been appraised at 4 different dealers right now and no one can tell its been repaired.....good luck and hope they make it right for you.

No defects yet, but I have noticed a large southern bug will cause havoc in the chipping department. I spend about 4 hours one day sanding and touch up painting. only after 12,xxx miles.

fighting with the bodyshop now....they painted over exisiting paint chips...without sanding..which i think is stupid...it's all in the prep work, you sand, primer if necessary, sand again, base, clear, then wetsand and buff...don't know why they just painted over the chips, they said all they got paid to do is to "refinish" the paint. so i have little spots over the hood....truck is still in the shop right now, no return phone calls!!! :td:

I am wondering if the lack of a duel stage paint is the reason you had paint chips.
Rock chips happen in multi stage paints as well.

The only *real way to fix rock chips would be to sand flush, color match and apply more base before the clear.

Personally, not sure if the shop or Toyota should be liable for chips to the paint if wasnt caused by the lack of a top coat.
(*this may be in question, the paint may be more susceptible to chipping without a top.....but I have seen many multi stage paints chipped to primer or metal, I just dont know in this case).

Not to be a D-hole but sounds like you were looking for a brand new paint job. Again I dont know how the paint would of looked with the clear from the factory.....but....

well industry standard is to fix the areas you are painting. thats part of "refinishing". if you have a wreck and dent a fender and they repair it they dont paint over rock chips on the leading edge..it should look new when done. dont accept anything less...you should not have to deal with this type of crap but i hate repaints for that reason...

question. i have an 08 tundra i bought the truck brand new in march of 09, within a year ive only put about a 1000 miles on it (dailey driver is a ford crown vic p-71, free gas) i ve washed it several times but never have waxed it. i first noticed hockey puck size circles on it the pirts time i washed it kinda like someone just rubbed the mess out of it in small patches all over the truck. its never really bothered me but i would hate to let the warranty slip away. is this the hazing you are referring to? if so i will be at toyota next friday to address it while the fix my recalled pedal.

the hazing we are referring to sounds like what u are describing. its weird shaped most of the time roundish or oval though..and when looking down the panel of a clean truck it looks like someone took 1000 grit wet sand paper and sanded the shine out of it....anything that doesnt shine like the rest of the panel is wrong and needs to be addressed. good luck. take this thread with you and there are other threads on here as well...in case they pitch a b!tch about it.

guys im just wondering, to prevent any potential trouble with the paint, why not have a reputable body shop apply a clear coat on a new white tundra?
