Im looking into buying a mattress for the back of the Sequoia. I will build a sleeping platform with storage this summer but would like to know what size mattress fits comfortably in the back.

I would like 2 drawers on either side (passenger/driver) with a cooler pull out in the middle. I will build a trap door into the platform for my shotgun.

I already have an idea of what I want to build but want to see whats already out there!

Show me what you got!

I've not built a sleeping platform, because most times I go camping I'm pulling a camper. But I recently did a long 4wd trip (White Rim Trail in Canyonlands NP, as a support vehicle for a biking trip) and my wife and I slept inside my rig. First off, it probably goes without saying that I don't have 3rd row seats in (they've been permanently removed). And I have a Husky cargo mat in the back, so the openings where the 3rd row latches are is covered by that. But we had a piece of 4" memory foam from the full size bed in our camper that we just laid down, it fit perfectly between the wheel wells. That was all. Slept great. So simple. During the day, just rolled it up so everyone's camping gear could go in there.

This is the mattress we use. It fits perfectly and folds up when not in use. We just lay it on the floor with the second row seats folded up. We also did a platform mock-up using coolers and Action packers but discovered we prefer the extra head room with it on the floor. We leave our gear outside/under the truck. Good luck.

Thanks for the response! So a full size mattress fits perfectly, that is exactly the information I was looking for.

@Dartman, I looked through your sleeping thread when I was researching. Thanks for the 4" memory foam couch/topper link it is exactly what i have been searching for. I like how I could make it into a couch during the day if we wanted to make room inside the car.

Well, I can't confirm that. We were using a piece of memory foam cut by the previous camper owners to fit the "full" size bed in our camper. But campers are notorious for fudging on exact measurements, so I don't know if a true 4'6" mattress (I believe that is the full size width) would fit or not. I'd hate for you to buy one and have it be off by an inch or two!

But it's definitely close to full size if not all the way there. I do know that my wife and I slept comfortably in there for three nights of camping.

Ill take measurements before ordering and if its close enough ill take my saw to it if I need to hahah. Im not worried about "retro fitting" memory foam. Im excited to get the ball rolling on this. I slept in the back of my 4runner for years so the Sequoia will feel extra spacious.

I used an Aerobed (full size). Bought an inverter and plugged that to the rear cig lighter. Plugged the pump into the inverter and within a minute had a comfy bed. FYI, the Aerobed deflates to the size of a sleeping bag so a big space saver over a pad/mattress.

Just throwing out a different option.
