This forum has been invaluable over the years with my Gen 1, now Gen 2 Tundra. Always been a lurker, but I have searched high and low for someone with a similar issue to mine, and have hit a dead-end.

2008 Crew Max Limited 4x4

So, for the full-disclosure part. I replaced my evaporator core, so I had to do the full dash-removal. That all went fairly smoothly, at least for this DIYer (not a mechanic). So, me being one to never not push my luck, I wanted to clean the cover of my instrument cluster because there appeared to be a dirty spot inside. So, I removed the cover, cleaned and replaced. I remember bumping the speedometer, but just enough that it moved off zero. So, I zeroed it back and forgot about it. After I had everything re-assembled, the speedometer started doing a crazy thing. It now spins backwards about 365 degrees when I follow this sequence of events:
  1. Start truck
  2. Shut truck off
  3. Open and close door
  4. Wait about a minute (or until things shut down, not sure what that is, but you can hear what appears to be a damper closing)
  5. Open the door
I can zero out the speedometer again, and it works as it should when driving. But it always does the spin again when I open the door to get back in the truck. I took the cover off of it again so I can manually reset before I drive. All other functions are working as well (RPM, Fuel, etc).

So, I am hoping someone out there can say, "oh yeah, all you have to do is xyz and you will be good to go".

This video (Speedometer Issue) shows what happens in step #5 above.

Hoping I'm don't have to buy a new instrument cluster, but that might be where I am at. I just can't for the life of me understand what I could have done to cause it.

Thanks,
Ed

For the life of me I dont know what it would be called or what section but I know I saw a thread on here where a guy pulled his whole speedo apart and like you said, just had to make sure everything went back together a certain way. Point is I would bet what you did wrong is something small, hopefully someone chimes in that can help you out. If not, I doubt you have to buy a new one, there are companies that will rebuild speedo's and I dont think the cost is that high. If you get nothing else and are stuck, google search some of those places and make some calls.

This isnt the one but read post 6, maybe you can try putting the needle back on with the truck running.

I pulled the needle off, drove around a bit, and put the needle back on while truck was still running. I have also disconnected the battery several times. Nothing has worked as of yet. I won't give up, and will keep scouring the inter-webs for suggestions.

What is weird is it happens every time I open the driver door. Something is sending a signal to the cluster when the door is open (just thought it was to display the door open light), but apparently that is also telling the speedometer to wake up.
