The directions say to lube the tubes each day while in use. They recomend "slip plate" graphite spray. Is this really necessary. Sounds like a pain in the butt.

To clear up some of this posts confusion:

You all have heard of being the third wheel, well this pertains to the fifth wheel and trust me by time you get there you want it to be lubed!

Sorry for the confusion. I should have been more direct in my presentation. Super Glide is a Fifth Wheel hitch. Nothing dirty about it unless you rub up against it wearing a white shirt. I should have posted this on a different forum. My mistake

Not to worry. These guys love this kind of back-and-forth stuff.

I agree with the Lucas 5th wheel lubricant. This thing is thick and sticky. You only have to put it once a year if you'll be towing the same trailer. It doesn't wash off easily. I used this stuff on my tractor during my 18-wheeler- trucking- days. :D Available at your nearest truck stop.

So do you have to lube it before you stick it? Or, can you apply lube once inserted?

I always try to lube before sticking it. In some situations, it's practically impossible without it. It just depends. Some tolorances are so precise, there is really no give, while others are so loose, there's really no need for it. I beleive that when lube is called for, more is usually better. I dont really mind a mess, so I just grab a handful and slather it on. I consider any excess to simply be a barrier to the elements or anything else that could cause damage if it got through.
