I recently purchased a 2005 Tundra Limited with Access Cab. The previous owner somehow messed up the tailgate mechanism pretty good. It will not open at all. I tried removing the inside cover and found that the rods were not even there that attach the handle to the side mechanisms. So then I tried triggering the mechanisms by hand. One of them is completely shot and the piece that is supposed to lift is snapped. The other side does nothing when I try to trigger it. Next I tried to use a flathead screwdriver to pry the clamp down to release, nothing. So then I tried taking out the bolts/nuts that hold each of the mechanisms onto the tailgate. They are on there really really good. I am not sure if they are even meant to come off from the inside or if you are supposed to have the tailgate open to back the bolts out from the other side. Does anyone have any kind of suggestions or solutions? I would prefer not to mess anything up seriously in this process but i have to get the tailgate to open for functionality and because one of my rear taillights is out (of course). Thanks in advance for everyones help. I can try to send pictures if needed.

Try a junk yard for replacement gate. Chop your broke p.o.s. off with a saws-all. Easy. Next question...

Without some clear, sharp pictures we really do much more than that! Sorry pal.

that happened to mine, we took it to a dealership, id call and ask the dealership about it or just take it to a dealership and they will put on a whole new type of tailgate handle, or junk yard works good too but u still might have to paint the tailgate if u do that.
