what are some common symptons of a WORN timing belt? I don't mean a failing timing belt... but one that is just worn and on it's way out?

They don't "wear" per se. They are constructed with rubber overlaying a polycarbonate core, so they either are maintaining structural integrity, or.... they fail catastrophically.

and judging by ur pic, if it fails catistrophically, u will have bent valves and all sorts of fun stuff, my timing belt was cracked every 1/8 of an inch and i only had 100 000 KMS on it... no symptoms at all, just took a chance...

Yes I took a chance too. I was time limited back in April and waited until end of July to do it at 172000kms. Not recomended waiting as the belt was the worst the dealer has ever seen prior to failure. Cracked every 1/4" on the outside. With some allmost
all the way through.
