Very new here and newbie so just learning. I bought my wife a FJ62 and have really enjoyed working on it so diving into doing the same with my 2002 Tundra. Love that truck and want to have it in 20 years as well like this cruiser so need to learn it.

Already got some help on rack and pinion question, but now onto the timing belt. I had it replaced at 100K, but now at 210K and need to do it. Was really thinking of doing it myself to learn the truck better. Few questions for the experts:

1) how much time should I set aside for this? Weekend enough?
2) Other than the water pump what other pulleys and or seals should be replaced? I plan to replace my alternator while in there being that I am starting to have high voltage readings on the gauge and since I am already in there...
3) Is there a good manual to follow for the truck other than the Service Manual that is $220?
4) This is the only part that concerned me. Fast forward to 13:00. He is putting something back on between 13-13:45 and I can't tell if he is tightening it or adjusting it to required specs. That pulley is moving around and he doesn't talk about it. Just don't want to think I got it and screw my engine up.
5) In reading timing belt threads one member mentioned using toyota's in place of gasket RVT for the water pump. Is that how it came stock or with the gasket? Any reason to use it over a gasket?

Well thanks for reading all this and appreciate any input. I know there are a lot of threads on timing belts and I have read a lot of them.

The oem Aisin kit comes with step by step instructions and torque specs included for all vehicles that use the 4.7. I got mine on Amazon. A weekend should do it. I timed mine twice to make sure I did it right, put everything back together extremely slow a cautiously, spent a couple hours trying to figure out where a bolt went. It went through the thermo housing and I was just completely missing it thinking it went in further deeper somewhere in the engine. Still had it done in 2 evenings in my driveway.

The kit comes with everything you should need. The tensioner, the waterpump, the 2 pulleys, and the belt. I used the factory gasket on mine. I don’t know why someone would opt not to. I did buy the Toyota silicon though for the thermostat housing, I did not use any generic stuff.

If you’re fairly competent with hand tools and have a good understanding of how this works, you can do this job. It’s not hard, just meticulous.

Keep all bolts and parts in order according to how you pulled them, have a table or something to set them on.

Take the radiator out. I can’t remember if it says to, but you have to drain coolant regardless, just pull it and cap your trans cooler lines. Trust me, it’s a lot easier.

+1 on the Aisin kit, top notch and OEM quality. Just be sure you’re following the right engine page since there are 4 slightly different versions. I also use Alldata DIY, some contradictions in instructions but as long as you stick with the same cam & crank pulley index markings throughout you’ll be fine. Google Toyota “poka yoke” and you’ll see some nice examples for the valve timing setup.
You have fo use sealant for the water inlet housing, there’s no gasket option & the Aisin stuff is great for that too. Be careful not to roll or pinch the o-ring when installing it. I also replaced the fan clutch, bracket and belt tensioner pulley. There are several molded bypass hoses you can only get to with the pump etc. removed, so I changed those too but they were a PITA to find locally.

I LOVE that crank tool. Can you share any other pictures of it, and how you made it?

I echo all the other comments: remove the radiator, take your time, can be done in a day but why rush it.

And, if you put the belt on backwards the truck won't start. Then you get to do the WHOLE job over again.

Easier the 2nd time.

For radiator- don’t forget if you have the 2 piece version of fan shroud it slides out right over the fan easily.
Harmonic balancer bolts to hold crank pulley are M8-1.25. Embarrassed how much time I wasted trying to figure that out, simply chase the threads and when they’re clean of rust the bolts fit.
Got one of these for 30 bucks and used 2 deepwell sockets and long bolts/washers. I was hoping to also use it for holding cam pulleys too but the pins are too big, so I just made smaller ones by grinding down spare bolts. Not a big deal to work around.

Same bolts I just purchased for removing original rear drums. Good to know I can use them for this as well!
