You missed the disclaimer in fine print
"Calculated with new SAE J2807 method."

Even though it's not supposed to go into effect until 2013, Toyota opted to start it in 2011 models. Tundra tow ratings took a hit this year.

It will be interesting to see the numbers after all the auto mfg are on board.

OP: you have to compare DC to DC. The 4.6 4x4 is rated at 6400lbs. Also, the vehicle weight is also used to determine the tow rating. 4x4 is a few hundred poounds heavier.

The transmission cooler and gearing make a big difference.

It looks like the numbers on Toyotas site are messed up. They are listing the towing capacity for the 4x2 models with towing package and the 4x4 models without the towing package.

I pulled out my window sticker to check the tow ratings they listed on my truck.
2010 DC 4.6 4x4
max tow without towing package: 6900lbs
max tow with towing package: 8300lbs

So with the new standards, the 2011 version of my truck dropped 400-500lbs.
Not too bad! Good to know they weren't pulling numbers out of their a$$.
