Toyota Announces Expansion of Baja California Plant
Capacity of Tacoma Pick-ups to Increase by 20,000 Units

01/20/2006 Tijuana, Baja California
Baja California Governor Eugenio Elorduy joined state and local leaders and Toyota executives today to announce an expansion for Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Baja California (TMMBC). The plant will increase production capacity of Tacoma pick-up trucks by 20,000 units, for a total annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles and 200,000 Tacoma truck beds.

The increased capacity will require an additional investment of US $37 million. The expansion is scheduled to be complete in 2007. Toyota is currently studying the amount of additional employment that will be needed to support the expansion.

"Since this plant was announced in 2002, we have expanded several times," said Bob Ried, vice president of TMMBC. "Thanks to a close partnership with local, state and federal governments, our sales operations in Mexico and the U.S., and our excellent asociados, each of these expansions has been successful. We look forward to taking on this new challenge and providing additional high quality vehicles to our customers."

"We are proud to call Toyota a neighbor and to have them part of our business community," added Governor Elorduy. "When Toyota first came to Baja California, they promised stable employment with the prospect of long-term growth. This expansion reinforces Toyota's ongoing commitment to Tijuana, Baja California, and Mexico."

TMMBC began operations in 2004 and produces Tacoma pick-ups for sale in the United States and Mexico. The plant also makes all Tacoma truck beds. TMMBC's operations include welding, paint and assembly, and the plant now employs approximately 800 asociados.

By 2008, Toyota will have the annual capacity to build 1.83 million cars and trucks, 1.44 million engines, and 600,000 automatic transmissions in North America. The company's direct employment is 38,000, with a current investment of $16.3 billion. In addition, Toyota's annual purchasing of parts, materials, goods and services from North American suppliers totals more than $26 billion. Toyota's North American-produced vehicles include the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Matrix, Sienna, Solara, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra, and the Lexus RX 330. In late 2006, Toyota will begin producing the Camry Hybrid in Kentucky, and in 2008, RAV4 will begin production in Ontario.
