I am going out of state soon to pick up a trailer that has electric brakes. The trailer has been used over the past 5 years however, without a brake controller so the brakes haven’t been activated in quite some time. Is there a way to deactivate the brakes in the built in truck brake controller?

If I have to, I’ll snip the wires and fix when I get back. Just would like to avoid that if possible. I would rather cut the wires than have the brakes seize up somewhere in between. The trailer is a single axle and it will be empty so I am not too concerned deactivating them for now. I have a ‘19 crewmax.

Set the level to 0 but only if you plan to not carry anything. Its risky. The chances are that you'll have to totally rebuild the brake system on the trailers.

Grease or reoil the hubs before you move the trailer. The tires are probably replaceable now.

The trailer tires are good and it rolls fine. Just hauling the empty trailer. I just don’t want the brakes to activate for fear they will seize up the tire all together. It had been used fairly regularly, just with no brake controller to the brake components haven’t moved. I don’t want to test the brakes till I can get it home and in my garage. I have never used controller since I bought the truck. When I had this same trailer a while ago, I had a different truck. That truck was smaller so I added the brakes after I bought it for a little more stopping power. I think the tundra can handle stopping it just fine. I think you are spot on with the rebuild.

You are talking about the gain button right?

Yeah. Change the display on your dash until it shows the trailer brake info. It’ll tell if it’s connected properly and tell you the gain, which you can set to zero. You can squeeze the level under output and test it and it should not brake at all.
