Was driving down the road today and My 00 Tundra just quit pulling. It has no forward or reverse gear. In outher words it will not move out of its tracks. No previous problem. Has 180k. Has a noise around bell housing, like torq converter. any ideas here or is it new tranny time ? Anyone every pull one of these out. Its 4x4 V-8 Auto. Any Help ? Thanks

The idea is to spend ~$70 at tranny shop so they tell you whats wrong with it. Then just buy online from Liquidators tranny for cheap or one off ebay for ~$700 install it yourself or have shop do it.

Are you sure the shifter is engaging the transmission? How did your Tundra shift? Was it the same from day one or has it been acting differently lately? There's a chance that the TC is the culprit but with 180k on her I think I'd go ahead and buy a rebuild online since you'll have to pretty much remove the tranny from the truck to swap it.

It shifted fine. I think TC spline may be stripped. Does the tranny need to come all the way out? Are there some instructional guides somwhere on here to get me started on removal? Thanks

Common problem on 99-03 or so tundra/tacoma/4runner. Its probably done, either rebuild or new one.

The trans. would have to come all the way out to get to the torque converter. Not a killer job, but no fun either. There is a small steel access plate on the center bottom of the bell housing held on by 1 or 2 small bolts, removing that may help make the call as to which part is at fault t/c or trans. If you decide to buy rebuilt not used make sure they will accept your "core" trans and t/c in whatever condition you find them in otherwise you could pay several hundred more bucks than you were expecting by the time you are done. For what it's worth I am currently running an '04 transmission on our '00 V8 4x4 Tundra with no issues in 6,000 miles so far.
I have been running synthetic fluid and an external cooler however all bolt holes /wiring/ plumbing hooked up direct with no mods. Good luck no matter which way you choose, oh and for what it's worth ,our Tundra had 175,000 on the blown trans. when we got it. Scott

Whoops! one minor correction, the used trans. I installed (with 5k miles on it) was sold to me as a 2003 but showed up with a salvage yard tag identifying it as a 2004 so I can't be positive about which year it truly was however it was at LEAST '03 maybe as late as '04. I have an unconfirmed suspicion that the "difference" is 2000 takes standard "dino oil" and the later years are spec'd out as requiring full synthetic (which is a good idea in any automatic anyway). 2000-2002 take regular dexon ii/iii. in 2003 they switched over to type t-iv. at some later year, which i cannot remember at the moment, they switched to type WS (world standard).

So do you guys think that is the only difference. I would have to flush coolant lines. Also is there any service manual on line that would help with tranny removal ? Thanks

Well, going to pull this tranny out. Does anyone remember if you can hold motor from top and if transfer needs to come off before transmision drops down. Thanks again !!

sorry if i repeated someones post didnt read all of them had mine rebuilt when it died on me last year problem seams with 00-03 tundras the planetary gears just wears out not as strong if you pull the tranny pan down and see metal shavings most likely those gears gave out

Yea Looks to be history, Right now just trying to get it out and need some info, like is it best to remove exhaust behind transmission or leave it on. Also should take transfer case off before trans comes out. Thanks
