I like knowing what things mean and VIN numbers have always intrigued me. So, I searched and found a great resource for 2005 Toyota's and although it is for the 2005 model year, I'm sure the info would be helpful for pre and post 2005 years.

Link is to downloadable PDF:

http://www.weber.edu/wsuimages/automotive/T-TEN/2005 VIN Toyota.pdf

Be sure to look at 2nd portion of spots 4 and 7. Spot 4 describes the body type but there are separate sections for passenger cars and multipurpose passenger vehicles. Spot 7 is used for either Restraint System or Grade... for passenger vehicles, it pertains to restraint system and for multipurpose passenger vehicles, it pertains to grade... SR5, Limited, etc.

Here you go!

This is a very informative topic, but isn't it easier to use the dedicated VIN Check site? I know that now I have a bunch of special online services where you can enter the wine you need into the search and see everything about the car instead of doing it all manually and deciphering every letter and number.
