I’ve purchased a 2005 Sequoia for my daughter. Of course I want to get everything working well and safe. The vehicle is due a timing belt replacement. My mechanic has recommended either a Gates kit or an Ansin kit; each of which has a sizable number of negative reviews that could be detrimental to the vehicle and safety; if thing were to be substandard. What kit would everyone recommend or have had good long-term experience with? I don’t mind paying more for the quality. I would prefer to avoid the $600 or $700 kits, if the $200 kits are just as reliable; as I am over budget some. Product seem to be made more cheaply, so I’m stumped. Any advice?

Aisin Kit is superior. I did my own 2002 Tundra 4.7L and used the Aisin Kit. I remember some reviewers complaining about the Water Pump Leaking maybe because of bad install? Mine has about 10k miles and so far so good.

Separately, Gates makes a nice Heavy Duty Accessory Belt (Green) that is top notch. Its about twice the weight of the standard duty and very stout. Highly recommend. Maybe replace the Alternator while in there while its open and easy to swap out.

Another vote for the Aisin TKT-021 kit.

Once upon a time, I received a defective water pump and got to do the job twice, but that was due to Amazon dropping the box and denting the rear outlet on the pump - check your parts carefully before installing!

Thanks for the comments. I’m going to link to an interesting video that explains my concern further; having to do with poor quality parts and cheap knockoffs. It is video 2 of 2. Video 1 is also insightful. Would love to get thoughts.
Also, if anyone can explain if Aisin parts are truly OEM?

Toyota uses Denso, Hitachi, Aisin, and Wells parts. Has for years. No way to know if you get a knock off without actually buying from Toyota Parts which comes with the sometimes 3x markup. On my 2002 Tundra, I’ve sourced all those companies names above without a problem starting back about 4 years ago when she was restored back to Glory.

I’ve bought directly through their stores on the Big A website. I’d be wary if the store was named Sciittolo or Hhammzz or one of those other weird stores.

My New Fan Pulley Bracket was an Aisin (ordered separate from WP kit) and the big complaint was the poor casting on the reviews. I ordered via Aisin Store and sure enough the casting had a few rough spots on the outer shell. Where it mattered everything was right on. Looked and felt OEM like the old worn out one that chirped on cold morning starts.

I replaced the Aisin Fan Coupling as well which attaches to the Bracket. That looked identical.

Go ahead and get a New Denso Radiator from the Dealer which is the cheapest ironically. Get the ‘replacement’ one which is about $150 vs. $350 one that is the same one but a different part #. Use your local Toyota Parts Programme Online Store and have it delivered to your stealership for no charge pick up.

My entire lower crankcase cover below the cast iron block, my entire transmission bell housing, my water pump, my oil pump is all AISIN....maybe even the alum heads are Aisin. Stop worrying about Aisin quality...it is solid......Toyota uses them as OEM parts......Toyota has ownership in Aisin....

My $.02 if you don’t go to dealer make you are getting genuine parts. Whatever brand you chose. During Covid my buddy (parts manager at local dealer) couldn’t get parts very quickly I decided to buy “genuine” on line so I could do water pump timing belt on weekend. I felt something wasn’t right but markings were very very close. Did timing belt tensioners pulleys and pump just because it was time not because of leaks or anything else. Water pump seal started leaking less than 18 months later during freezing winter storm . I had been waiting for a nice week end to re do the entire thing but before I could pump let go and radiator blew. Wobble bearing caused belt to tear but did not rip. I wasn’t getting cheaper parts I thought I bought genuine. Just know the source.

Use the Aisin one. It's what Toyota put in there. I did mine 2017 and it is great. There are youtube videos that show exactly how to do it. A1 Auto, I think is the one I used. Here is the kit AISIN TKT021 from Rock Auto for your 2005 Sequoia. Click on Timing Belt, Water Pump and components kit. Then AISIN TKT021.

I went with Aisin from RockAuto. I think they are big enough that they wouldn't knowingly sell knock off parts. Their prices are good. Shipping is a bit confusing as they have multiple warehouses so if you're ordering other stuff, sometimes it's better to buy a slightly more expensive part because it'll ship from the same warehouse. RockAuto has the Denso radiator too if you're needing one for a good price.

Rock Auto sells the real stuff. If you get a Denso rebuild alternator, you will get a brand new Denso one that Denso rebuilt and you can't tell the difference from a new one. It is a new one, since Denso did it and has all new parts and new box. Same with Aisin. It is the real stuff. I got my Aisin timing belt from them and it was just that..Aisin.

I agree on the Aisin kit. My '05 Tundra was on the ORIGINAL timing belt at 216K, and it was cracking and time to be replaced. Aisin makes a quality kit. Make sure you do the water pump, gaskets, and tensioners as well. You'll have to drain the radiator. Good time for a drain and fill or flush and fill.

I've used two Aisin kits, one on an 04 and the other on an 06. I'm about to buy a third for my daughter's 05. No problems whatsoever with parts or leaks.
Make sure you run the camshaft poistion sensor behind the vertical metal tube, otherwise the serpentine belt will cut through the wires. Ask me how I know!!!
