It looks like another US manufacturing plant icon is closing. From reading the following links, it looks like this downturn started in the 1970s.

In the 1970s, they employed 10,000, then kept downsizing (product shift) and also laying off until the last 1,100 were given the boot.

The last 1,100 jobs will go to Mexico.

I don't know if they have COBRA .. but this is what one of the Whirlpool workers basically said ...

I was watching it on the news this morning ... one worker said ... "there will be 1,100 families without medical care".

The Nummi plant in California is shutting down, I understand the Corolla production will be shifted to the Canadian plant. On the bright side, the workers in Canada will have medical insurance.
