I was just wondering if anybody know if the plastic engine cover (the plastic piece that covers the top of the engine) for our Tundras are a needed item (insulates the engine heat, etc) or is it just for show (designed to look nice, hide all the wires, etc) ?:ts:

I had mine off for a few weeks and didn't notice any difference at all.

They are a performance item.

The plastic cover sucks heat out of the plastic intake manifold.
This causes a denser cooler air charge into the cylinders and creates a vortex spiral flow to the air charge due to the vortices generated with the air temp being higher on one side then the other (google inversion it if you need further info).

This causes a dyno proven 28% increase in HP and 15% better MPG.

Toyota doesnt want you to know this but if you were to find some way to double stack the covers you could generate supercharger HP levels (likely because TRD wouldnt sell any more of the very expensive superchargers).

I will be selling my cover in the next few weeks after I get my charger installed.
Let me know if you are interested.

Do you have to switch to premium fuel?:D

LOL - Maybe I should run refridgerant/cooling lines on & around the plastic intake manifold to chill the air!

A lot of guys took them off. I know Barny Fife for one but others have too.

just for show. mine is peeling anyway so ill probably take it off to spray it
The dealership will replace it if you take it in; mine did. I even took the forum pages printed out to show them that this is an issue with the product and not caused by me. They replaced with no issues.

I have since painted my new one to give it more of a custom look (the cheap way; no airbrushing). I just repainted my covers/lids for the TRD CAI, Fuse Box, and Relays since the paint was peeling off my TRD CAI. Paint does not stick well to this material; it is already peeling even though I roughed it up with a wire brush and used primer first...... Oh well, next time, I will use some sand paper; I just didn't have any available at the time and thought the brush would work.

No mechanic here, but I have had the thing off, and it's only purpose is to make the engine compartment look good. It actually retains engine heat under it, which really isn't an engines best friend.

I saw a book called Shop Class as Soul Craft talking about the decline of the trades. One of the points, among many, the author made in an interview was referring to these plastic covers on engines. As if the sight of an alternator or serpentine belt might offend our sensibilities, we hide and cover what used to be celebrated and revered. The cover is useless and has no point other than decoration.

There is nothing wrong with having something as nothing more than decoration. If you think about it, the majority of a boob is purely for decoration and serves no other purpose.... How dare you suggest that a boob is 75% useless and has no point other than decoration..... how dare you.....:D

hi guy's, if any of you want to part with your cover.
there are a few of us gen1 guys that would like to buy it.
in gen1 forum.
i'm sure with a little mod. it would fit.
as i read the posts i don't think there would be a heat issue.
i want to have a mural put on mine, but leave the 5.7.
i know it's fake. but it would be a funny conversation peice at the show's.
thanks,
gorilla
