Yikes, I'm 6'2" - not sure if I could not put my drivers seat all the way back...

 

There's a couple threads I read a few months ago discussing this same topic. As far as I know I think it can be done and there are certain rear-facing child seats that fit better than others.

 

You should have no problem with rear facing seats when used in the middle location. If you have a split bench, then you may have to pull the passenger seat up or drop the arm rest down.

Using a front facing seat is possible in any location but you will have to bring the seats forward somewhat.

 

I could not do it, I tried a few seats. So I just traded for a Double cab before the baby was born. If you can use an alternate vehicle for a while, they grow out of the rear facing seat fairly quickly. The forward facing seat fits better.

My friend, when you start posting threads like these it is time to seriously, and sadly, consider a Double Cab Tundra or Tacoma. The back seat in the Access Cab isn't even decent for making out. It is only for holding people for short drives and inanimate objects like groceries. Or bodies... just throwing that out there.

Oh, does anyone know how to clean blood out of a seat? ;-)

Seriously though, mwfromva, I might consider getting a (GASP!) car for handling the little one. The backseat might be safer for him or her there, or in the backseat of a Double Cab pickup. I don't plan on having kids, so I will be holding onto my Access Cab for a LONG time.

Funny you should post this question! My first child is due in about 4 weeks and have already fitted a child seat (rated up to 60 lbs, adjusts from infant on up). I'm 6' 1" and can have my seat all the way back, although I have to move the passenger seat up a bit, it's a split bench with the flip down storage /armrest. I actually used the upper tether on the baby seat and hooked it to the seatbelt mount for the front middle seat, the baby seat is very secure, I also plan on swinging by a local Fire Station, approved by the local hospitals in baby seats, to have mine checked out.

Oh Yeah I got 2003 Tundra Access Cab and it is cramped for adults, but is perfect for baby seats and little people! Maybe I'll do some pics for you. Check back in a day or so, I'll get some. Hope that helps.

I have two in the back of mine. One forward and one back. They take up most of the space but you can still squeez an adult in there if needed. I will get a pic later today and post it up. Hell I will go get one now. brb

I'll tell you, you'll get tired of reaching into the middle to hook the booger in there. And also, when they are front facing they also take up a good bit of room. I'm coming out of a Chevy ext. cab (bigger than access cab) and with two kids in carseats it was a terrible PITA. I had to have one in the middle and one behind the passenger seat because my seat would need pushed forward if they were behind me. We do have larger carseats (britax Marathons, go to 60#). I also have a smaller carseat that I used in my VW backseat, but the kids weren't comfy in there at all. Maybe if you've got real small kids or something, but at 12 months mine is crammed into that smaller seat that fits decent in the back of the ext. cab.

Crew-cab is the only choice for any amount of comfort. If you don't mind the headaches or don't tote them around constantly, you could probably get by. Once they're in booster seats they'll fit back there fine. Of course, they recommend putting off the booster seat for as long as possible these days. I'd have my 3yo in one by now, but the wife objects.

 

Here are the pics, you can see they take a hell of a lot of room and to put a rear facing seat in it needs to be in the middle unless you are a very short person and keep your seat far forward. When I bought my truck we only planned on having one child so the AC was fine. Now we have two and the DC would have been a better option.

As far as having to lean in to get the child in the middle seat is not a big hassel.

Wow, sure can tell that is a "kids" backseat...

Not too bad. I was thinking about getting some booster seats, or "a" seat for my nephew until a fight with my brother ruined any chance of uncle and nephew outings.

 

I had a 2000 ac before the 05 DC I have now and putting a baby seat in the access was very crowded and I could not let the seat back far enough for me to be comfortable. The lady I bought it from told me that was why she was getting rid of it, had trouble getting the child seat in it but I thought I could live with it. No such thing as to much room.

 

All I have to say is that I have an AC for sale right now because of this. Using it for one child was ok but having a toddler seat and a baby carrier just left no room for other stuff and those damn doors are killer in parking lots.

 

I can nicely fit a Britax Maraton seat in the middle of my 2000 AC. It fits fowards facing or rear facing. I have it forward now and I mounted a portable DVD player on top of the cargo bin in between the seats (I have captains chairs not split bench). Hope that helps. If you want a car seat anywhere else it will be a very tight fit.

 

I finally took some pics of my baby seat installed, it's been so cold up here, I really didn't wantto freez my *** off taking pics outside!

Anyway, first I used a seat protector, placed the seat, ran the seatbelt thru and tightened it real good. Finally, I attached the rear seat tether to the front middle seatbelt mount, nice and snug. There you go! That seat ain't going nowhere, but the top of the seat is close to my head, but this way I can just turn my head to see my little guy! The important part is that the driver's seat is all the way back and passenger is most of the way!
