To make my question more specific, has anyone installed a single din (standard size) aftermarket stereo in their 07 Tundra. I have seen the numerous articles about upgrading to better Nav/ DVD playing units (I am not that hi-tech yet) but havent seen anyone post of just installing a better stereo in their Tundra. I am thinking about doing it simply because now that I have the amp and better speakers I truly think the head unit quality is poor and that their arent enough sound adjustments available (treble, bass) to get the best sound available. I'd be interested in some pics of what it looks like with just a single din in the big dash space of the current 6 dics non-JBL system.

if you don't want to replace the factory head unit, you may want to try something like this. it plays with the signal coming out of the factory headunit to make it better for aftermarket parts. to technical for me.

i read about something else like this in one of the otehr car mags, but can't remember which one. i'll take a look at it tonight.

I don't have any pictures but all you need is an insert that holds the single din unit and it usually has a pocket/cubby hole for the remainder of the space. I did this in another truck and it looked good. I did not use the pocket very often. Another option is to consider a double din with no navigation or DVD capabilities. This is what I plan to do with my Tundra next week. I'll use the Alpine head unit IVA-W205.

I installed a single din Pioneer unit, ordered thru Crutchfield. Comes with a free wiring harness and Metra dash kit it you go thru them.

Clarion makes a pretty good looking D Din unit that has adjustable colors for the unit to match the dash. Its a cd/mp3 unit. Looked OK

Clarion has come a long way and have heard good things about their products lately.

I went with the Alpine CDA9883. Has a single CD and nice Ipod interface and a ton of features and options. Another plus is the display colors match the climate controls below. Price was about $200 and at the time it included the Ipod cable ($30 value ). Nice clean sound compared to the factory 6 disc unit. I ran the Ipod cable to the "map" pocket in the center console. I also elected to go with the matt black finish on the dash kit. Easier to keep clean and scratch free compared to the piano finish and the matt black matches the air vents and switches in the dash.

You could also install a Pioneer DEH-P9800BT single-DIN head unit. Put one in my old Rodeo last year. It has Bluetooth and will allow you to use your Bluetooth-enable cell phone just like the Toyota OEM JBL system (maybe even better). It also has high-quality 5V line-level outs (including S-Woofer out) in case you want to use an external amplifier. You can also upload home videos to make your own splash screen. Here is a link to a video about it:

This unit looks very interesting with 8v pre-outs, I just wish Eclipse made a double-din of the same quality....

Has anyone used this deck?

Eclipse CD7100 CD receiver with MP3/WMA playback at Crutchfield.com
I have the Eclipse CD5000 in my 87 Corolla GT-S with the 8v pre-outs and the sound quality is truly amazing! Very crisp, tight sound. I'm running that headunit through a MTX 5-channel ProX500 amp, MTX crossover, Boston Acoustics speakers and a JL 8" sub.

The biggest difference between the CD5000 and the CD7100 is the "interface" which is much improved on the CD7100, if I had a complaint about the CD5000 is that the buttons are too small and too touchy/sensitive, otherwise the sound quality is about as good as it gets from my experience.

Ironic, I was actually looking at that stereo today on Crutchfields site. Did it clearly make the sound better from the factoy stereo? Do you still have the factory speakers or did you upgrade? Would dig seeing a picture of your dash with it in it.
Actually I replaced the stock speakers with some Polk 3 way hooked up to a 4x100 amp and a single 10" sub in the back for some fill. I have the RCSB so I only have the 2 door speakers plus the 2 tweeters in the dash. The dash tweeters are hooked to the Alpine unit which has an internal amp to drive the tweeters but also has a setting to turn off the internal amp and the tweeters, which sounds better IMO. Before I put in the Alpine head unit in, I had the amp connected to the factory 6 disc (non JBL) using an inline RCA converter. Sounded OK but the Alpine produces a much cleaner sound. Big difference and well worth the money to change the head unit IMO. Sorry, but my camera is out of commision at this time or I'd post a picture. If you want to keep a stock OEM look, which wasn't a big priority to me, you might want to look for a double din to fill the dash. A single din will always look like an aftermarket. Though I will say the Alpine display colors matching the climate control red and blue looks pretty cool.

First shot at inserting photos. I put an Alpine 9886-new model- in mine. Not the greatest pics, but you get the idea. The sound improvement is worth giving up the factory look to me.This model has USB and IPOD cables on the rear- cables are ran into the lower glove box. Works great.

I was wondering if someone could make a nice cover plate for that pocket? Maybe anodized aluminum with some logo of your choice, or not. The Toyota trucks logo would look good.

Wish a company would make a single din dash kit for these trucks.
