My tailpipes are dumped just "past" the rear axle

 

Thanks for the pictures. How long are your chambered mufflers and what diameter? How would they compare to a Flowmaster 40/50 series muffler? Have you notice a little more fuel efficiency or power?

I am curious because some of the research has turned up muscle car forums swearing up and down about this exhaust, and I have not heard much about them.

I believe they are 2.25"ID/3"OD and 30" overall.
This design is well over 40 years old and a known performer.There is NO PACKING in these,their NOT GLASS PACKS !!(all steel)

I used this style mufflers(GMMG) with a Direct-Flow Lid and put down 24 RWHP on my 01 LS1.Ported the TB and combined the total went to 27 RWHP :tu: all for less then $1K.

Overall they compare to nothing else on the market,much cleaner sound then FlowMaster,Borla and MagnaFlow.
No droan @ 70 mph.
Best of all,I got 2 mufflers for the price of one 40 Series Flow Master

Dang, Negra that may be the best sounding, deepest growl I've heard on the 5.7's IMO.

Did you lose ANY low end torque??

You say no drone at 70. What about other speeds 60-65? Or, when the rpms are ranging between 1500-2000??

As far as "loss" I sure cant tell it,it GETS AFTER IT! like it always has
There are 3 other guys near me that heard it when I stopped into the dealer for a complete detail,they were in for oil changes. One has the factory TRD,one had Dual FlowMaster and the other guy had a *4 day old Corsa* they went nuts over the sound of my truck
The guy with the Corsa was the most impressed,said he would swap it out with in days if he knew where to buy the stuff. I hooked them all up with the info,to date the Corsa and FlowMaster guys have since added the Classic Chambers. The TRD guy isn't likely to (I think his is a Lease)

Anyway . . . . . . .
ZERO DROAN !! all the way to red line,what you do hear is the steady low tone rumble of a quality exhaust system.
No reverb what so ever. I have another post with some in cab speed runs (0-100mph) I'll try and find it and add it to this post.
I still need to get my H-pipe done to finish it up,should add just a hair more bass to the overall rpm rev.:tu:

Yes,I dont do the butt Dyno gig,its lame and extremely self serving . 5-10 hp gains are worthless when applied to real world rolling resistance and vehicle aerodynamics .What is seen on a dyno drum print out only serves as an illusion for the mind of the owner.Real performance gains start at 25 and increase from there.(1320 Time slips)

People think your ride is cheap if you dont run stainless exhaust,your some how inferior because you aren't running whats trendy or ultra expensive.
The proof couldn't be any more defined,I dont want to brag about my system being anything that its not.

NONE! of the Top Marketed systems compare to the sound quality these old school mufflers produce.
Its a shame to spend $1,200 on a system and not have the droan free clarity of a $250 steel set-up.

If you look past the smoke,you'll see the mirrors.
I'm not trying to sell anyone on this product,the fewer that run these mufflers the more unique my truck will remain :nod: Is there true performance increases ? Sure to some degree,its a straight thru muffler. Far superior to the "30lb trash can" thats hanging under the stockers.:amen:?

FWIW;
I'm planning to drop the secondary cats and installing some 18" chambers in their place,or dropping the cats and having a full pipe(no flanges) running back into custom length chambers around 40"(2.5" ID/4"OD) H-pipe installed on either without question. Same dump location will apply(after the axle)

With what I have now and changing to either of the above set ups I will still be WELL under $500 invested(parts/labor)
I can do 2-3 different set ups and not be any where near $800,much less $1,200.00 :thumb:
BUT ! if a decent set of long tubes happen to hit the market all that will be by-passed

Same simplicity applies to the Cold Air Boxs,Toyota has them just right :thumb:,whats is needed is a straight tube to replace the stocker (tube only)that will do away with the sound baffle and the accordion section for a smooth flow straight to the TB.

There is plenty of of un'sponsored common performance knowledge that is not seen on SPEEDTV !
"Missing it" only applies if you succumb to the pressures of Advertising !

They did the GMMG style exhaust on my LS1.
Their Turbo style mufflers are pretty freakin trick :tu:
If your down with paying twice the money for stainless then get after it ! It will sound just like the steel versions sold for 1/3rd the dough.
Using an H-pipe will gain you more BASS, X-pipes will increase the brass/pingy rattling tones of a Flowmaster type uke:

1. You bought the 30" long version. Does longer version equate to a more quiet muffler?

2. I thought that you needed to match the 2.25 inch exhaust on the stock muffler. On your setup, I noticed that you used a 2.25 in and a 3" out. Won't you lose back pressure and lose some torque?

3. Is this exhaust going to wake the hood when I leave in the morning, or is it mild enough for the daily driving routine? I want louder than stock but not obnoxious "look at me" sound.

 

1) Yes
These are built in house and can be made to custom length.Personally the 30" work nice,but I think 40" would be just a hair better @ WOT.
2) The Loss of back Pressure thing was and still is a rumor.Where is there proof ? I haven't seen a dyno sheet proving 3" exhaust being detrimental to these 5.7 Platforms.The overall OD is 3" but the flow path is 2.25"
I have 2.5" tail pipes
3)There is abit of a "bark" on cold start thats last for a few seconds then chills to a nice rumble.I always allow my vehicles to idle several minutes on a cold start before driving(even in warm weather) so I'm well clear of the neighbors before I can get to 30 mph.I dont make half the noise the Cummings/Duramax's do when leaving the neighborhood.
You control the noise level,under 1500 rpm they just rumble,listen to my first clip again(one with the speedo). The 0-50 will give you an idea what its like for daily city levels.
I cant stand obnoxious exhaust either,but these mufflers have the ability to BE LOOKED AT ! But its something that can be controlled,40 Series Flows are always loud and only get louder when their leaned on :faint:

I think I will measure to see if 40" inch custom Powersticks may fit under there. I am in California and the smog police will be all over me if I remove some of the smog equipment.

I just have to find out what a 40" powerstick will cost and multiply that by 2. Then find a reputable local smog shop who can install the H pipe and some tips to finish it off. Thanks for the help.

 

I'm not to familiar with the left Coast Nazi's,but here in Texas the exhaust exit must clear the passenger compartment.Which means anything fore or aft of the rear axle is plenty compliant.
The 40 sticks will fit,Ive already measured all that,plenty of room left for a tail pipe boogy out the sides or rear .
If your Nazi's allow it do consider dumping the pipes short.

 

I remember these things from my early hot rod days! I had a set of these on a mustang and they sounded simply fantastic - a louder but well rounded exhaust note that other chambered mufflers can't reproduce. My only concern would be those louvers on the inside restricting things a bit.

Dumping the pipes under the bed, even if it clears the cab, is going to cause resonances on the inside of the truck from the sound waves reflecting off the ground from underneath the body. An exhaust system with full length tubing is going to sound better 99% of the time compared to dumping it right after the muffler(s).

 

They flow very free,you can run them two ways.
Louvers forward is standard,turn them around and their scary loud like straight thru pipe.
My tailpipe dump angle is around 45* to prevent sound reflection.When I rev it the dust out past the bumper moves which pretty well confirms the angle is correct for exiting the rear of the chassis.
