I've been looking into options for my tandem Ocean Kayak Cabo, which is 14 feet long. Check outthe Yakima Outdoorsman or Thule Xsporter for rack for the bed of the truck, or check out the Yakima DryDock or Thule Goal Post (both are T type racks that attach via your hitch mount). www.craigslist.org can be a great place to look. These racks are spendy, but quite a bit cheaper on CL.

I had a similar problem with my Crewmax, it is a short bed and I have a 13' SOT. I ended up ordering the Dual Rack from Truck Racks, Ladder Racks, Canoe Racks & More | Buy Direct & Save | US Rack it mounts in the trac system (Available on the Tacoma as well), and removes with 4 bolts in about 5 minutes. Yeah this helps, thanks guys. I hadn't seen the hitch racks, they seem pretty solid. I'm still leaning towards the bed rack. I like the look of the Outdoorsman, but it is definitely a bit pricey. I came across this rack at Lowes that seems like a pretty good deal. It definitely gives me a good starting point so I don't think I'll worry too much about getting the short bed.

 

I think that is the fixed mount one, the sliding one goes for a bit more. You can get an over the bed extender for the tracrac too.
As for the short/ long ed, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a long bed on a lot.

 

Just a little update, I drove three Tacomas today: a DC Long Bed, a DC Short Bed, and a lifted 4x4 DC Short bed(for fun). To be honest I wasn't extremely impressed with them compared to my Tundra which I pretty much expected since it's a full size. I don't know if this is normal, but on all three of the Tacomas the breaking seemed very weak. Long story short, I bought a Highlander Limited that I didn't even know I liked until I drove it so I'll be throwing my yak on the roof rack of that bad boy. I appreciate the input though guys. Hopefully someone else can find use of this post at least.

But in case someone finds this thread in the future and wonders about the drydock, here's a pic with our 13-foot kayak on it (and a shorter one in the bed). It's height-adjustable and before I need to lower it a little cause I have the back end too high.

 

Dry Dock will work well or other hitch extensions like the Extend-A-Hitch I use that can either be run horizontal to extend the bed a few feet or vertical to span the bed. Works well for 1 large kayak or canoe. Now that I've got two, I'm looking for other options.
