functionality of window/heated mirror defrost button

Hey all,

I have the 2007 TRD 8 cyl 5.7 liter DC (in case that makes a difference). I have heard and was told that their is a windshield defroster/ de-icer functionality. I haven't believed it, and so gave it a test. My truck is cold (not driven for about 6 hours) and has about an inch of snow on it. So, I turned the truck to the accessory position, and hit that button.

I waited for the results. There were, basically, none. The mirrors (I have the extended truck/tow package) DID heat. That was legit. However, after 20 minutes, the windshield showed NO heating or thawing at all. I have heard from other folks here that the replacing the front windshield is expensive because of the heater hook ups.

I can tell you there was NO discernable showing of defrosting of my windshield with that button pushed.

So, what is this 'cold weather window' package.

I was also told that that feature was a heated resevoir of the windshield washer stuff. Also seems to be BS. I mean, it is very possible that as the engine heats the washer fluid heats. However, that does me no good when I go out at 6 am in Denver and have a frozen truck. By the time the juice gets warmed up... the engine is warmed up and so I am using the heater and classic defroster.

My question then... is this. What is this feature supposed to be, and do any of y'all have a different experience?

thanks in advance for your feedback, I can't wait to learn more.

As far as I know the defroster button only works best with the truck running. It directs all the air to the windshield, but mine won't blow if it's really cold until the truck has been running for a minute or 2. I haven't heard of the windshield been electrically heated

If you have the "cold package" the button that controls the heated mirrors also turns on a SMALL heating strip just under the wipers. It's not for defrosting the whole window but rather just a SMALL area that the defrost blower cannot heat because this area is below the defrost duct.

If you'll do a search for "Cold Weather Package" you'll find a 4 page long thread with that exact heading.:D
Then since almost EVERYTHING has been discussed here many times we should all stop posting and just do searches instead.

When someone asks a question they want a QUICK response, not do a search instead.

The heater strip for the wipers is great to keep the ice build up from forming while driving during a ice/snow storm. The mirror heat works great for morning dew and frost.
Just my $.02.

Always amazes me what you can find if you can find if you spend a minute to look....this is from the Toyota website:

Cold Weather Package:

Heavy-duty battery, heavy-duty starter, mud guards and power heated black outside mirrors (Double Cab and CrewMax include windshield wiper de-icer with timer).

Just trying to help...didn't realize it took longer to read an existing post than it does to wait for useful responses to a new post. When I have a question I search first, then if I don't see anything helpful I ask...seems logical to me. Any way I was not trying to be a smart ***, I was just trying to help out. Maybe try a little less coffee... you seem a little edgy.;)

Edgy No :D

However, I ALREADY answered his question or didn't you see that ;)

Here is your problem...you need to actually start the truck.
Leaving the heater blower out of it, the heat strips in the windshield and on the mirrors have a very heavy current draw and will not work efficiently when the truck is not running.

My completely frosted tow mirrors are clear and my wipers are free within 3 or 4 minutes, with no additional heat source (IE: the blower), the windshield is still frosted over mind you, but the wipers are free.

Thanks all, I appreciate your insight. I kinda new what the company line was on the heated windshield thingy... but wanted to know your real life experiences.

I agree. Every time someone asks a question there has to be a a$$ hole on here say do a search. Well you know what. I don't always want to do a search, so to he!! with your search. If you don't want to answer there question without your only answer "do a search" then move on to the next thread.:td::td:

My thoughts exactly. Isn't that what forums are for, to ask questions and get other peoples opinions. Just my $.02

Lono33, I have the cold weather package and indeed it does have the heat strip below the wipers to heat up that portion of windshield that as one member described, is inaccessible to the defrost heater vent atop the dash.

Sanosuke!
