Hey All,

I'm looking to get a soft shell for my two week old Tacoma and I'd love to hear any firsthand opinions on either the Bestop or the Softopper. I did a search, but there's little recent information. I'm leaning towards the Bestop because of the side windows. Thoughts?

i've got a softop on my '05 and i luv it! the softopper won't support a rack on top like the bestop will and i personally don't like the side windows, but it is for your truck so get what you think U would like. i take my softopper on and off all the time to haul things when i need to (don't know if you can do that with the bestop). just think it thru and get what best suits U. i get compliments on my softopper all the time.

The only reason why I wouldnt buy a soft top is because your stuff is just out of sight, its not protected like it would be under a hard top, retractable, etc.

Hey,

I've had a soft top on my 06 Tacoma for the last 24 hours. I bought it at a local 4 wheel parts parformance center and they matched an internet price. $499.95 out the door. I could've beaten the price online by a few bucks but being able to drive a few miles and stare a person in the face was well worth it. If anyone is looking for parts and they have a 4 wheel parts store nearby, do ask for a price match, it was sweet.

As for the top, it's a Bestop Supertop, and so far I love it. No, it's not a hard top, but neither was I looking for a hard top. The instal was easy and with the side windows there's little compromise to field of view. I like the collapsable aspect and I recognize that nothing will be safe from being stolen in the bed. But, that's where my Border Collie Garth comes in. He loves riding shotgun, and now he can safely ride in the bed. I have the side and rear windows out for the time being and he'll keep anyone from messing with my stuff.

I'd still love to hear from others who have first hand experience with a soft top and I'll keep the forum posted on my experiences with my Bestop.

Enjoy

I have a Softopper on my truck and really love it. I went through the Bestop/Softopper debate before I bought it and decided on the Softopper for a couple of reasons...1. I didn't want side windows because not only did I not want people to be able to see through the cover so easily but the plastic windows tend to scratch and discolor over time. 2. I didn't like how the sides remove on the Bestop. On the Softopper you just unsnap the sides and they roll right up (something I wouldn't do repeatedly with the plastic windows due to the scratching issue) and it isn't necessary to remove the side windows to fold the cover flat. It may not be necessary on the Bestop either but the install/use video had way to many steps for my liking. Neither cover's frame is strong enough to support my basket but I believe Bestop sells an optional outer frame that will support one. I'd be willing to bet it could be used with either cover... Overall I liked the cleaner look of the Softopper. The Bestop is a good cover as well though. It really is just a matter of person preference.

FWIW, Bestop doesn't offer one for the Short Bed D-Cab tacomas. Atleast not according to their web-site and the person I talked to last week.
Wow really? Seems to me that would be one of the most common models.
