Rattling mirror assembly

My passenger side mirror rattles and vibrates pretty good. I searched the forums and it looks to be the torx screws from the underside that are loose. Does anyone know what size the torx screws are? I have to go get a set in order to tighten, or at least try to get them tightened. THis will be a seek and destroy mission as it is now driving me nuts - every time a passenger shuts the door, it sounds like it's going to fall off. Thanks for any help!

Oh yea, its a '00 A/C.

Two of the three screws (T25 if I recall correctly) can be removed without taking the door apart to remove the mirror mount: just use some masking tape to protect the paint work. It helps to have a 1/4" flex drive as well.

Remove the two, carefully clean the old locking compound off the threads, and reset with a drop of blue thread locker. You really need good tool engagement to avoid stripping the heads - and to set them tight.

Worked great for me: both mirrors are now rock solid.

Am I reading this wrong. I had a '00 A/C and I had to replace the whole assembly on the driver's side thanks to an inattentive driver. When I swapped it out it was nuts holding threaded studs. Is this the same piece you're talking about or am I losing my mind?

I have a 2005 Tundra 4x DC and I have been having the same problem with the driver side miror as well. I loosened the torx screws and hen re tightened them, but it seams that no matter how tight I tighten them it still vibrates. I asked the dealer here in at Hanford Toyota, (they suck IMO) he told me to take the chrome backing off and tighten the mechanics from the port in the back. Well, I tried that and broke a mounting tab for the trim piece and found you cannot access it anyhoo. Dealer recommended a replacement mirror at $230, not cover under warranty either.

Chances are if you don't tighten all of the torx screws the mirror will still move somewhat. I ended up removing my whole mirror to access the one closest to the body before it completely tightened up with no vibration. Don't use a cheap torx tool tip or you will screw up the female socket on the screw heads.

Your whole mirror assembly needs to be replaced. My brand new 2006 had a rattle coming from the corner of the door where the mirror bolted in. I took everything off, retightened the bolts that held the mirror on and still had a vibration, rattling sound. The vibration is coming from between the mirror and the bracket that is attached to the door. In other words, it's exactly where the mirror pivots. If you look at the gap between the mirror and the flat part of the bracket that's what is causing the sound. It resonates into the door like a funnel through the bracket.
To fix the problem go get some fiberglass or plastic washers from home depot that would fit a 1/2" in bolt. Fold your mirror in, put a washer... maybe 2 if you need it onto the horizontal flat section on you bracket. Now extend your mirror out to the original driving position and make sure the washer is snuggly in the gap between the bracket and the mirror.
Ta Da!!!!!! No more noise!!! I ended up showing my dealer the problem and they replaced my entire mirror assembly anyway. Since your warrenty is expired this little 30 cent expense might just fix your rattle noise and your mirror vibration too:tu:...

Both my mirrors had the same problem. I removed the entire mirror assembly to get to all 3 torx screws. I tightened them all and no more rattling. I guess if it happens again I'll completely remove the screws so I can clean them and use new lock tight. Anyway, you may not need to replace the mirror.

My suggestion is taking the mirror assembly off so you can get all 3 screws cleaned and tightened and also avoid risking striping them out from trying to do it at a funky position. It only takes a few extra minutes to take the mirror completely off. Also on mine the screw you can't get to w/o removing was loose. Don't over tighten the 3 bolts on the inner door when putting the mirror back on. Good luck.

dont even bother, you will end up breaking off the clips tha thold it on. The dealer told me to remove it to tighten, yeah to just get some money outta me. I ended up fiberglassing the clip back on and putting it back together. I no need to retighten the three screws on the bottom of the mirror mount again, but i tihnk one is stripped so I am screwed. I've been reading everyone experience with this. I just bought a 2005 limited. Both the mirrors rattled terribly. In order to access all the torx screws I took off the mirror, pop off the tweeter cover for access to the bolts that hold the mirror. Be careful, as others have said, about scratching paint with the mirror removed as it's still connected by the electric cables and dangles with the mounting bolts wanting to scratch your paint. I found torx screws were extremely tight and I suspect someone has tried this before. I was able to remove them with a good torx driver. I put a small lock washer on each torx screw and put it back together. That's it! No more rattle.:D Apparently these torx screws were bottomed out. Give it a try... total cost was a couple cents for these tiny lock washers.

This may sound like a stupid question, but since I'm so good at breaking things when I try to remove them, how do you remove the mirrors on 06 DC?? My passenger side mirror is shaking around at highway speeds. Had the same problem with the driver's side when the truck was about 6 months old and the dealership replaced under warranty. Now, the passenger side is loose.

Hi csawyer,
Pop off the tweeter covers above the door skin in front of the window. I was able to do it with a plastic putty knife by prying it between the outside window frame weather seal and the tweeter cover. You will see three large yellow anodized bolts. Take the nuts off and the mirror pulls straight out. Be careful handling the mirror removed. Those bolts will try very hard to scratch your door paint.

To complete fixing the rattle problem see my previous post on the subject and be certain you have a high quality, correctly sized torx driver or you will strip out the head.:(

You can save yourself a lot of work if you just put a washer on the torx screw that you can easily access without removing the whole assembly. That's all I did and it's enough to keep it from rattling around. Only if that doesn't work would I go to all the trouble of loosening the whole assembly.

I know on my double cab i popped off the triangle piece with the tweeter in it exposing several nuts that hold the mirror onto the door and tightened them up to stop the mirror from shaking.

Re: Rattling mirror assembly FIX

I put some of the fabric side of some Velcro Tape in there to stop mine and tighten the lower torx screw, Worked great, as the tape is black & no one can tell!
